Archer Passes Another, Eagles Win At The Pit

Dakari Archer moved into third on the Eagles' all-time scoring list in win over Vanguard.

Box Score COSTA MESA, Calif. --- Another day, another standout player for Biola Men's Basketball. The No. 7 Eagles keep on chugging along as tonight they notched their 20th win of the 2016-17 season spearheaded by a phenomenal shooting clinic put on by sophomore Trevor Treinen.

Treinen made eight of his 10 shots from the field, went 4-of-4 from the line and made four of Biola's eight three-pointers as he piled on a career-high 24 points and led Biola to an 83-74 road win over bitter Golden State Athletic Conference rivals, the Vanguard Lions.

"Seeing Trevor play like that is no surprise to me. He is an incredible talent and can do what he did tonight on a nightly basis if he comes confident," said senior forward Caelan Tiongson. "This kid is going to be special, and I am super proud of him."

Hearing that praise from Tiongson should be no surprise for Treinen as the pair are the best of friends on and off the court. Tonight they were the two biggest weapons on the floor as the Eagles gritted their way to a statement win on the road.

Tiongson posted his second double-double of the season, ending the night with 14 points and 12 rebounds. The fiery leader of this Eagles' contingent thrives in the confined quarters of Vanguard's home gym. He had 14 points and nearly 10 rebounds in last year's come-from-behind victory too.

"It's amazing to play in the PIT," said Tiongson. "The environment is so loud and hectic, you really have to buy into it in order to succeed. It's great for players that play with a lot of energy like our guys do. Now we will always be able to have our last memory ever playing there as a win."

The game was kept fairly close throughout the first half, as Vanguard held between four and seven points back for much of the final eight minutes of the first frame. Despite having as large of a lead as 13 points in the early going, Biola would end with just a 29-25 halftime lead after being held to just nine points over the final nine minutes.

Twelve of Treinen's 24 came in the first 20 minutes as he started 4-of-5 in 17 minutes on the floor. Dakari Archer was the team's second-leading scorer with six. The sixth point was Archer's 1,724th of his career, which moved him past Bob Hilts (1960-64) into sole possession of third on the Eagles' all-time leading scorer list. His next target is Biola Hall of Famer Ronn Johnson (1968-73), who had 1,803.

Over a 10-minute stretch in the middle of the second half the Eagles went on a 29-11 run that opened the game up to a 68-45 advantage. That 23-point lead with 5:42 left to play was Biola's largest of the game.

The lead was brought on by an uptick in scoring inside as Tiongson began to pile on his points after being held to just two points in the first half. Also, Alex Talma had nine second-half points and Ryan Swain was taking the ball straight to the bucket with more regularity to add seven more.

That lead would surprisingly be whittled down over the final minutes as Biola was very streaky in this outing. The team came away with the victory, which is what is most important, but there will definitely be a few tweaks that will be worked on at practice over the next few days.

Namely, the Eagles turned the ball over too much late in the game and were not closing out as well on the perimeter in the final minutes. The Lions made nine second-half three-point shots in order to tighten a Biola lead that was as much as 23 points down to as little as seven within the final minute.

Biola's 20 turnovers were a new season-high, and the 10 total three-point makes the team allowed tied its season-high. Both categories are blips on the radar and sure to be fixed by the next time this group takes the floor.

The Eagles improved to 20-2 (6-2 GSAC) in moved into a virtual tie for first place atop the conference standings with William Jessup (5-1) and Westmont (6-2). Biola is back home for its next game as it hosts Arizona Christian (12-7, 0-7 GSAC) at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday.
