Biola Bounces Back To Salvage A Split With UAV

The Eagles had a tough time getting anything going in game one, but they exploded in the nightcap.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LA MIRADA, Calif. --- About two hours into the day it sure didn't seem like it, but Biola Softball ended up winning the afternoon as it split a drizzly doubleheader with Antelope Valley but owned the run differential in the series 9-3.

The Eagles suffered a crushing 2-0 defeat under the downpour in game one before finding its true self and powering to a dominant 9-1 run-run win in the second game.

The series seemed to be in doubt as the skies opened up and rain began to fall onto Freedom Field about an hour before the scheduled 2:00 p.m. start time. The rain continued to fall, but just lightly, and the teams were able to begin the first game just about 40 minutes behind schedule.

Tabitha Bayers controlled the Biola hitters throughout game one as she posted a complete game shutout for the Pioneers and held the Eagles to just three total hits. She struck out five, walked just two and held Biola's 1-4 hitters 0-for-11.

UAV got a run in the second and a run in the fifth to accomplish all the scoring there would be in the opener in a big 2-0 upset victory.

After a bit of a heart-to-hear between games the Eagles' squad came out fired up and ready to attack in game two. Kendall Maddox got the start for Head Coach Lorie Coleman and would end up getting the victory with her two solid innings of work.

She gets the win because of some big-time support from her rejuvenated offense. Andi Hormel set the tone right out of the gate with a four-pitch walk to open the top of the first. She would then steal second on the first pitch of the next at-bat to really turn up the heat on UAV's game two starter, Kiyanna Watley.

Watley would quickly get the first out of the inning as Bria Madrid sacrificed Hormel to third. But after that there was absolutely no stopping the Eagles' offense for the next 10 minutes or so.

Heather Hall, Maddox and Selina Sherlin hit back-to-back-to-back singles to put Biola ahead 2-0 and knock Watley out of the game. Then, the relief pitcher's first batter faced, Areana Ramos, drove a ball to right field that ended up being a three-run inside-the-park homerun that changed the scope of the entire game and made it 5-0.

Biola would score twice in the second and two more in the third to open up a 9-1 lead that would hold all the way through into the top of the fifth inning when Kimmy Triolo came in and closed things out for BU. She allowed a leadoff double but utilized her no-hit stuff to induce some strikeouts and finish off the run-rule win.

Biola moves to 18-22-1 following its split with UAV. It wins the season series against the Pioneers with a 3-1 record. Antelope Valley dropped to 7-31 after today's results. The Eagles are scheduled to be back in action on Saturday with a home doubleheader against Arizona Christian beginning at noon. However, weather could impact those start times so keep an eye on athletics.biola.edu for updates.
