Box Score 2 LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It was an emotional start to the day as Biola Softball's four seniors were honored in a pregame ceremony before the Eagles hosted San Diego Christian for a Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader at Freedom Field.
Â
"This was a tough group for me to say goodbye to," said Head Coach
Lorie Coleman. "They've all, in their own way, contributed to our program in such a big way."
Â
Both games were competitive as Biola and the Hawks played to a split with SDC earning a 5-1 win in game one and the Eagles wrapping up a 4-2 victory in the second game.
Â
Biola outhit the Hawks 8-7 in the opener and actually left fewer runners on base than SDC, but a three-run seventh inning powered San Diego Christian to the win. The Hawks also scored once in the second and once in the third to build their lead.
Â
The Eagles' only run in the first game came on a two-out double from
Selina Sherlin in the bottom of the third. Her double drove home
Karen Lieng who had doubled earlier in the inning.
Â
The game one loss was a bummer following the celebration before the game, but Head Coach
Lorie Coleman's team came out hungry for the second game looking to end the seniors' careers at Freedom Field on a high note.
Â
Tremendous pitching is what carried the team to a victory in the nightcap.
Kendall Maddox started,
Terri Van Dagens did the heavy lifting in the middle of the game to earn the win before
Kimmy Triolo recorded a save by pitching the final inning.
Kaile Chavez also got two very important outs in the middle of the only inning the Hawks managed to score in during the second game.
Â
"Whenever the pitchers are doing well we always have a chance to win," said Coleman. "The sequence went really well. Kendall is a really great starter, Terri was really strong in the middle and Kimmy did a great job closing."
Â
The Eagles' staff held the Hawks to just two runs on six hits in a dominant game two performance. Biola opened the scoring in the bottom of the first as it was quick to immediately erase all thoughts of the loss in the opener.
Â
Leadoff hitter extraordinaire,
Andi Hormel, took a 3-1 pitch back up the middle to set the table for Biola's power hitters.
Selina Sherlin moved her around the bases before a
Heather Hall double pushed her home to start the scoring in the game.
Â
That 1-0 lead would hold steady until the bottom of the fourth inning when the Eagles' offense got going again and extended to a 4-0 advantage. Biola's hitters did a great job of taking advantage of pressure situations in this one as all four runs were scored with two outs in the inning.
Â
The three insurance runs in the fourth inning came courtesy a RBI single from Lieng and a two-run double from Hormel. The freshman shortstop was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run as she helped carry the team to the game two win.
Â
All of San Diego Christian's scoring came in the top of the sixth inning as they loaded the bases with just one out in the inning and then took advantage of it for two runs. Chavez managed to get the final two outs by way of groundout to
Iliana Morales in order to maintain the slim 4-2 lead.
Â
The Eagles went down in order in the bottom of the sixth before Triolo came on to secure her second save of the year with a scoreless seventh inning to help Biola salvage one win this year over SDC.
Â
Biola moves to 21-28-1 (7-15 GSAC) while San Diego Christian becomes 29-14 (10-8 GSAC). Today was the final home series of the year and of the careers of Hall, Maddox,
Bria Madrid and Morales. Biola's regular season comes to a close on Saturday as they play at Vanguard. The Eagles enter Saturday just one game shy of a spot in the GSAC Tournament.
