Box Score 2 LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Missed opportunities were common at Freedom Field on Wednesday afternoon as the No. 20 Biola Eagles dropped two games against Doane College (Neb.).
Â
The visiting Tigers took the first game in convincing fashion, winning 6-0. Doane just squeaked by with gut-wrenching 3-2 final in the second game.
Â
The Eagles were out of it before the game ever really got going in game one as a second inning grand slam handed Doane the six-run lead it would carry throughout the game.
Â
Biola was not without opportunity to stage a comeback, but despite putting up seven hits in the ballgame could not score a single run against the combination of Ellie doughy and Meghan Uldrich for Doane.
Â
Biola's best opportunity to get on the board was in the bottom of the fourth when
Selina Sherlin began the inning with a leadoff double and
Bria Madrid singled immediately after to get two runners in scoring position and no one out. However, on this day the Eagles' offense could not even capitalize on that as they got shutout.
The one big positive from game one was the 5.2 scoreless innings in relief by
Kaile Chavez. The freshman allowed six hits and even hit two batters, but still she was able to work without surrendering any runs to the opposition. Also,
Bria Madrid gunned down three different runners on the base paths and Doane never attempted to run after she shut them down a third time.
Â
The second game was more of a closely matched contest as the heart of Biola's batting order went head-to-head with hot-hitting Sam Valadez on the other side. Valadez hit two homeruns off of Biola's game two starter,
Selina Sherlin, to account for all three of the Tigers' runs in this ballgame.
Â
Sherlin allowed three runs on five hits in four innings before Chavez came back in to shut the scoring down over three one-hit innings in relief.
Â
Once Chavez was in the game the Eagles began to figure things out offensively a bit.
Kasey Hormel followed an
Iliana Morales walk and
Anjie Amezquita sacrifice bunt with a double in the bottom of the fifth to begin the Eagles' comeback with the team's first run of the day.
Â
It seemed as if the team was well suited to score at least one more in the bottom of the sixth as
Kimmy Triolo loaded the bases by reaching on a fielder's choice put into effect thanks to some great base running from
Heather Hall. The bases were loaded with one out as Biola was primed to overcome the slim Tigers lead. Unfortunately, a hard-hit line drive was speared by the Tigers' shortstop and a double play was turned to end the threat.
Â
Biola would pick up one in the bottom of the seventh and have the tying on third base with two outs, but could not complete the comeback.
Â
The team left 17 runners on the base paths between the two games as it posted just two total runs on the day. Biola falls to 11-10-1 with these latest last two losses. Doane continued its strong California road trip and improved to 9-4 overall.
The Eagles travel to Phoenix this weekend for doubleheaders at Arizona Christian and Embry-Riddle.
