Box Score 2 LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It was an up-and-down kind of afternoon for Head Coach
Lorie Coleman's Biola Softball team on Friday afternoon.
Â
The Eagles hosted the Golden Eagles of La Sierra for a doubleheader at Freedom Field looking to improve upon their season record of 1-0-1 against LSU in 2016.
Â
Biola did just that with a solid 13-8 victory in the opener of the doubleheader, but a seven-run outburst in the first two innings of game two helped the Golden Eagles steal an 8-1 victory in the second game.
Â
Without
Terri Van Dagens available on this afternoon Coleman had to throw
Kaile Chavez in game one and
Kendall Maddox in the second game. Chavez picked up a win in a very adventurous outing and Maddox suffered a tough loss in her second start of the season.
Â
For a game that ended up with 21 combined runs being scored, the first game actually saw two very strong starting pitching performances. Chavez held the Golden Eagles to just two hits through the first three innings, while her offense backed her up with two early runs.
Â
A three-spot for LSU in the top of the third inning felt like it was really going to swing the game in the other direction as neither team had been gaining much traction offensively.
Â
However, the Eagles erased thoughts of that real quick with eight runs in their half of the fourth inning. Coleman's squad scored the eight runs off of eight hits in the inning.
Â
The big outburst began with five consecutive singles from
Hailey Boyett,
Maranda Galindo,
Kasey Hormel,
Andi Hormel and Chavez. Those were the Eagles' 7-8-9-1-2 batters and two of them reached base by beating out great bunts.
Â
So, once the bottom part of the order opened up the inning, it was up to the heart of the order to get the job done the rest of the way.
Selina Sherlin hit a run-scoring double and
Anjie Amezquita followed her with an RBI groundout. Then, as the Eagles batted around in the inning, Boyett and Galindo each hit two-out extra-base RBI hits to blow the game out to 10-3.
Â
After that, a small strike zone from the home plate umpire allowed a ton of batters to reach base by way of the walk, which helped the teams combine for eight more runs as the game crawled towards its 13-8 conclusion.
Â
Biola would end up with 16 hits in the game one victory, which was led by multi-hit performances from Chavez,
Heather Hall, Sherlin and Boyett. It was a confidence-building kind of outing for the freshman, Boyett, who came into the day with a batting average below .200.
Â
Game two was a very forgettable game. The Golden Eagles jumped out to an 7-1 advantage through 1.5 innings and would hold on for the 8-1 final.
Â
Biola's lone run came courtesy a Sherlin single in the bottom of the first. The sophomore added .25 to her season batting average and had three RBI in a great offensive day.
Â
She also got her second appearance of the 2016 season in the circle during game two. She took over for Maddox for the final five innings of the game and allowed only two hits and one run to the Golden Eagles. She proved herself to be an interesting weapon out of the bullpen for Coleman this season.
Â
Biola moves to 10-7-1 on the season following the doubleheader split. The team begins Golden State Athletic Conference play on Saturday with a road doubleheader at Hope International.
