Owls Have A Hoot In Extra Innings

Biola suffers a sweep at the hands of William Woods in a pair of painful losses.

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Today's doubleheader between Biola and William Woods had just as many emotional ups and downs as an X-games Motocross dirt track. Ultimately, after a gut-wrenching second game Biola ended up suffering two losses, 0-8 and 9-12.

The Eagles never could get the ball rolling in the opener behind a dominant pitching performance from the Owls' Allison Waskow. Waskow pitched all six innings of the run-rule shortened first game and held the Eagles to just two hits and two walks as she faced four batters over the minimum.

Two big offensive innings keyed William Woods' success in the first game as they piled four runs onto Kendall Maddox and Selina Sherlin in the second inning and then added four more off of Kimmy Triolo in the top of the sixth.

After those four runs in the sixth put the game into run-rule territory all the pressure was piled onto the Eagles' quiet bats. Even with a leadoff hit-by-pitch Biola could get nothing done in the bottom half of the sixth and the game ended.

Game two was a much more closely contested affair as the two teams needed two extra innings in order to find the eventual winner. Both teams managed four runs through the first two innings to set us up for a high scoring battle.

The Owls put a three-spot on the board in the first with a two-out three-run homerun off the bat of Brailee Schulte. Then they added another in the second with a RBI single.

The Eagles got their runs in reverse order with a Selina Sherlin sacrifice fly in the first and then three runs in the second off an Andi Hormel RBI single and a two-run sacrifice fly off the bat of Bria Madrid.

William Woods pushed back ahead in the top of the fourth with another homerun, this time a solo shot by Amanda Bouchey, which forced Head Coach Lorie Coleman to pull Sherlin in favor of Triolo.

The junior hurler powered through her first 2.1 innings of work and had WWU hitters chasing her high-powered pitches. This allowed the Eagles to pull the game back even at five with a single run in the fifth.

The Eagles knotted the game at five when Bria Madrid walked with the bases loaded. Walks and loaded bases were a common theme for BU throughout game two as they compiled 12 base-on-balls and managed to load the bases in multiple innings.

Unfortunately, the one run would be all Biola could muster out of that opportunity as it stranded three of its 12 runners left on base during game two.

So, with a 5-5 score the two teams headed into extra innings. William Woods took full advantage of getting a free runner on second base and scored a go-ahead run before recording an out in the eighth. They had the bases loaded and no outs and it seemed the game would be blown out of reach.

A great pitch by Triolo and fantastic fielding plays from Maranda Galindo and Hormel helped the Eagles get out of the inning with no further damage done.

The momentum was fully in the hands of the Eagles following the phenomenal defense and it seemed like the team was primed to go out and win the game in the bottom half. Madrid sacrificed the Eagles' free runner, Hormel, to third base to record the first out.

Then Hormel scampered home on a wild pitch to tie the ballgame once again and have Biola full of energy and confidence with just one out in the inning.

Heather Hall walked and was sacrificed over by Selina Sherlin before getting pulled for pinch runner Marissa Reyes, who was making her first appearance of the season.

With two outs and a runner on second the pressure was squarely on the shoulders of Triolo to win it for herself with the bat. She came through with a single up the middle, but Reyes was gunned down in a play at the plate by a fantastic throw from WWU center fielder, Hannah Campbell.

That out ended the inning and then the Owls exploded for six runs in the top of the ninth to put the game out of reach and force the sweep of the Eagles by a final score of 12-9.

Biola falls to 16-20-1 with the losses and William Woods improved to 14-19 with the two victories. The Eagles are back into Golden State Athletic Conference play in their next outing. They host Hope International for two games on Tuesday, April 5.
