Box Score 2 LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola got a big split with Hamline (MN) on Wednesday afternoon recovering well after a 3-1 loss in the first game to walk-off with a 13-5 run-rule victory in an explosive game two.
Â
Casey Anderson was the story of the first game as the starter for the Pipers took full advantage of Biola's aggressive offensive approach. She held the Eagles to one run through an impressive complete game performance.
Â
Biola's approach in the first game was to swing early and swing often and it resulted in eight hits but not a whole lot of runs because the Eagles did a lot of grounding out.
Â
Hamline scored a single run in the second and added two more after a touch of drama in the fourth to build a 3-0 lead that seemed unshakable the way that Anderson was hurling.
Â
The Eagles tacked on their single score in the bottom of the sixth when
Kendall Maddox cashed in on a two-out double by
Kimmy Triolo. Maddox slapped a ball through to right field to bring her pitching buddy across home plate.
Â
Game two was much more in the Eagles' favor. Instead of hitting the ball hard but straight at the fielders, the Eagles managed to use the elements to their advantage by hitting the ball into the wind and benefitting by scoring 13 times on 11 hits.
Â
Hamline's game two pitcher, Sarah DeMars, was nowhere near as effective as her predecessor as she walked four, hit one and allowed the double-digit hit total.
Â
The Eagles got the offense going immediately with multiple runs crossing the plate in the first, second and third innings. Biola built a 3-0 lead in support of starter
Terri Van Dagens as
Andi Hormel and
Bria Madrid continued to be spark plugs at the top of the BU order.
Â
Hormel ledoff the game with a single and Madrid reached on a hit-by-pitch before they and Triolo all came around to score on singles from Triolo and
Maranda Galindo.
Galindo's play was one of the most exciting of the day as she laid down a bunt with two outs and the bases loaded and beat it out by a half of a step to bring Triolo across the plate and extend the lead.
Â
The mood at Freedom Field was dampened just for a moment when Hamline scored four runs in the top of the second to reclaim the lead and force Head Coach
Lorie Coleman to reevaluate her pitching options.
Â
A
Heather Hall triple, one of three three-baggers that Biola hit in game two, scored
Selina Sherlin to tie the game in the bottom of the second. Then, Hall scored on a wild pitch to make it a 5-4 Eagles lead.
Â
That score got tied in the top half as the Pipers got to Maddox in a hurry as she came in relief of Van Dagens. Maddox would settle down and strike out the final two batters in the frame as she escaped with a tie score.
Â
The game at that point felt like it would be a shootout until the very end as some unique plays helped the lead trade hands time after time.
Â
Timely hitting by the Eagles in the bottom of the third and bottom of the fifth would change all of that as BU began to build its case for the run-rule win.
Â
Galindo was again involved in one of the most exciting plays of the day in the third inning. With
Areana Ramos on in front of her, she reached base on a throwing error by the third baseman and came all the way around to score as the ball rolled towards the outfield fence in foul territory in right field.
Â
The Eagles would add on one more in that inning to move into the later stages of the game with a relatively uncomfortable 8-5 lead. Once Sherlin was inserted into the game to pitch in the top of the fourth that lead began to feel much more comfortable.
Â
The sophomore Samoan had a fantastic outing in the circle as she went on to work two perfect innings with three strikeouts against a baffled Pipers' lineup.
Â
Kimmy Triolo was the bat that sealed the deal for the Eagles in the bottom of the fifth. With the bases loaded and two outs she hit a three-run triple to extend the lead to eight runs and end the game early.
Â
Sherlin earned the pitching win as the most effective reliever in game two and improved to 2-2 on the season. The Eagles move to 16-18-1 with the doubleheader split and get about a week off before returning home to host William Woods for two games on March 31 at 11:00 a.m.
