Box Score 2 LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Softball returned to Freedom Field on Thursday for the first day of back-to-back Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheaders. Biola suffered two losses at the hands of William Jessup and fell to 1-7 in GSAC play this season.
Â
William Jessup piled on six runs in the first three innings of the first game and would eventually come away with a 6-0 victory. Game two was completely different as the teams battled from start to finish until WJU walked away with a 4-3 win in extra-innings.
Â
Game one got away from the Eagles fast as WJU was able to get four consecutive hits with two outs in the top of the first to stake a 2-0 lead immediately. Two Biola batters were plunked to get some base runners in the bottom half, but the Eagles could not bring them home.
Â
The second inning was even more damaging as a sacrifice bunt attempt turned into three runs from the visiting Warriors when a ball was thrown away into left field.
Â
After those five runs set the Eagles at a big disadvantage the team's pitching began to dig in.
Selina Sherlin threw the ball well in the third and fourth and then
Kimmy Triolo came in and had a fantastic three innings in relief.
Â
Triolo allowed William Jessup just one hit over the final three innings while striking out four and walking just one. She had her hit-and-miss stuff dialed all the way up against this WJU lineup that could not touch her all day on Thursday.
Â
Biola would get the bases loaded in the fifth (after the fourth hit batter of the afternoon), but could not get any runs across the plate against WJU's game-winner, Shelbi Graifman. The Eagles left nine runners on base while getting shutout for the fifth time in 2016.
Â
Leaving runners on base grieved this Biola team again in a very close game two. The Eagles fell behind early again as a wild pitch and error allowed two WJU runners to score in the first and second.
Â
However,
Andi Hormel found a way to finally push some runners all the way around with her RBI single to tie the game a two in the bottom of the third in support of the Eagles' starter,
Kaile Chavez.
Â
Chavez would come out of the game in the fourth as Head Coach
Lorie Coleman called
Terri Van Dagens' number.
Â
Van Dagens got two quick outs before the WJU catcher, Mikayla Laymance, homered to put the Warriors back on top at 3-2.
Â
Van Dagens would finish the fourth and work through the fifth with no more damage done. Once the Eagles got out of the top of the fifth with relative ease it was time to start putting pressure on using the offense.
Â
Hormel led off the inning with a walk and advanced all the way around on a
Selina Sherlin and WJU error. That gave the Eagles a game tying run and runner on second base with just one outs.
Â
Unfortunately, the Eagles would leave Sherlin stranded as the game rolled into its final two innings. Triolo came back on for the final two innings and allowed just one base runner while striking out three.
Â
This setup her team with a chance to win the game in the bottom of the seventh and walk off with a split. A Sherlin single would be the only offense for Biola in the seventh, which meant the game would go into extra innings.
Â
WJU's leadoff hitter in the eighth hit a ball that landed just a few inches fair down the right field line to push WJU to the 4-3 advantage before Triolo struck out two more and ended their offense.
Â
Unfortunately,
Missy Poti got stranded at second in Biola's half of the eighth, as the team could muster absolutely nothing in the extra inning and instead suffered the loss to drop to 13-16-1 (1-7 GSAC) on the season. William Jessup improved to 8-12 (2-2 GSAC).
Â
The Eagles are back in action at Freedom Field at 2:00 p.m. on Friday for a doubleheader with Menlo College.
