Box Score 2 SANTEE, Calif. --- Biola Softball had its hopes soaring as it entered a Golden State Athletic Conference date with San Diego Christian on Tuesday, but an inability to push runners across in game one and some defensive lapses in game two led to two losses.
Â
San Diego finished the first game early by pushing an eighth run across the plate in the sixth inning to win 8-0. The Eagles staged a seventh-inning comeback in game two to tighten the game to 10-9, but ultimately could not overcome SDC's four unearned runs.
Â
Game one came to its unfortunate conclusion because San Diego Christian found ways to make the most of its opportunities with two outs. Seven of the Hawks' eight runs in the run-rule shortened game came with two outs in the inning, including six runs crossing the plate after two quick groundouts in the bottom of the third.
Â
Biola got six hits in the opener, but failed to bring anything across the dish as the Hawks' starter, Kendra Kuper, was adept at getting herself out of jams throughout her six innings in the circle.
Â
Kuper's weapon of choice against the Eagles was the strikeout. She retired nine Biola hitters by way of the K. This is a new single-game high for batting strikeouts by the Biola order in 2016.
Â
Andy Hormel,
Selina Sherlin and
Kimmy Triolo accounted for five of the Eagles' six hits in the ballgame, but even with a third of the team's hits being for extra-bases no damage was done.
Â
Kaile Chavez got the start for Head Coach
Lorie Coleman and is saddled with the loss after 2.2 innings and seven earned runs against.
Selina Sherlin came in and held the Hawks to just three hits and one run in pitching the final 2.2 innings before SDC's eighth run crossed the plate to end the game in the sixth.
Â
Game two began with a bang as
Anjie Amezquita hit a one-out grand slam straight out of center field. She handed
Terri Van Dagens an immediate 4-0 lead as SDC came to the plate for their first hacks of the game.
Â
Unfortunately, it seems as if the wind was blowing out on this breezy Tuesday at the Santee Sportsplex, because the Hawks' Jordan Neal was also able to get ahold of one in the first inning and tightened the game to a 4-3 Biola lead immediately.
Â
The Eagles stayed ahead until the bottom of the third inning. After Biola extended to a 6-3 lead in the top of the inning the Hawks exploded for four more runs on three hits and two Eagles errors in the bottom of the third.
Â
The home team would add two more in the fourth and another in the fifth as the combination of a hot offense and struggling Eagles defense was a perfect mixture for San Diego Christian's come-from-behind win.
Â
The Eagles did all they could to muster a comeback in the seventh inning with a pair of doubles and a two-run shot from
Kendall Maddox, but ultimately fell one run shy of tying the game and two runs shy of forcing a win.
Â
The two losses drop Biola back under .500 at 13-14-1. The Eagles fell to 1-5 in Golden State Athletic Conference play while San Diego Christian improved to 19-6 (5-1 GSAC).Â
