Box Score 2 PRESCOTT, Ariz. ---
Selina Sherlin and her hard-hitting teammates broke out their bats in a big way during day two of Biola Softball's road trip to Arizona. Sherlin went yard three times and the Eagles piled on 19 combined runs in two run-rule victories in the desert against Embry-Riddle.
Â
"After our disappointing losses yesterday our coaching staff had an early-morning meeting to brainstorm a better hitting plan," said Head Coach
Lorie Coleman. "We came up with a hitting approach that changed the game around for many of our hitters, especially Selina."
Â
Both games were all about the offensive onslaught brought about by Coleman's rejuvenated lineup. The Eagles scored nine runs on 13 hits over the course of six innings in the opener and added 10 on 10 hits in five innings during game two.
Â
Sherlin was the star of the day as she hit one homerun in game one and went yard twice in an explosive game two effort. It was the sophomore's first three homeruns of the 2016 season.
Â
She was an absolute beast on the day as she took over both games with her offensive prowess. It's almost as if she took it upon herself to ensure that the Eagles broke the five-game losing streak they came into the day with. She finished 6-for-7 at the dish with four RBI and five runs scored and was also the winning pitcher in Biola's 10-2 game two victory.
Â
Kaile Chavez earned the win in game one after she threw six dominant shutout innings against the home Eagles. She evened her season record to 5-5 and dropped her ERA to a team-leading 2.43 with the one-hit win.
Â
"When our hitting finally ignited it took the pressure off our pitcher in game one and resulted in a win for Kaile," said Coleman.
Â
Joining Sherlin in today's power surge was
Andi Hormel and
Heather Hall. Hormel hit a line drive homerun in the fourth inning of game one. It was the first career collegiate homerun for the freshman shortstop. Hall's homer was her third of the year as she upped her team-leading slugging percentage to .584.
Â
Iliana Morales was also a huge factor in the Eagles' game one shutout win. She was 2-for-3 and drove in a third of the team's runs.
Kimmy Triolo also settled nicely into her new role as a designated player with a 1-for-1 showing with two walks and two runs scored.
Â
In game two it was
Hailey Boyett who had the other standout performance. The freshman right fielder was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Also,
Maranda Galindo found a way to be ultra effective. She reached base twice and scored twice.
Â
The two wins help the Eagles improve to 13-12-1 on the year and regain a bunch of confidence as they head back into conference play next week. Biola comes back from this trip to begin a stretch of 16 consecutive home games. The Eagles host William Jessup for a doubleheader on Thursday beginning at 2:00 p.m.
