Box Score 2 RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Offense is king with the 2016 Biola Softball team. A fresh batch of big bats has propelled Head Coach
Lorie Coleman's program to a place where it has not been in a few years – an offense-first team.
Â
Ten runs combined in the first two outings of the season would seem to support this new approach to winning ballgames. The Eagles went 1-0-1 in the first day of competition for the 2016 season.
Â
The Eagles earned a 3-2 win behind
Terri Van Dagens' complete game in the first game of a doubleheader at La Sierra before playing to a 7-7 tie with the Golden Eagles in game two.
Â
The first game was won by the third inning as three runs would be all Biola would need to earn a victory in Van Dagens' first start of the season. The sophomore started pitched all seven innings and struck out four while working her way out of tough situations all afternoon long.
Â
"Terri pitched like a champ and had a great outing," said Coleman.
Â
Backing her up was a solid lineup that combined for three runs off of four hits against the LSU starter, Sarai Camacho.
Â
The first two runs came in the top of the second inning as an
Iliana Morales double cleared the bases to bring
Areana Ramos and
Bria Madrid across the plate. That was the team's first hit of the new season and brought home the first runs of the year.
Â
After La Sierra got its first run in the bottom half of the second inning a Sherlin RBI single in the third brought
Kasey Hormel across the plate as the game's winning run.
Â
Camacho would be pulled from the game after four innings and LSU reliever Miranda Frickle would pitch the final three innings without allowing Biola a single hit.
Â
La Sierra got its second run of the game in the bottom of the sixth and was able to load the bases against Van Dagens with two outs in the seventh, but a popout to Sherlin ended the game and began the season 1-0 for the Eagles.
Â
Both teams had some defensive struggles in the opener, combining for five errors in the seven innings played.
Â
No box score is available for the second game, but we know it ended in a 7-7 tie as the game was called after the bottom of the seventh due to La Sierra's inability to play after sundown due to Seventh Day Adventist Sabbath policies.
Â
We know that
Heather Hall had a two-run homerun and a two-rbi triple in game two and Sherlin also added a two-rbi triple.
Â
"It was a little shaky today, but I think this is an offensive team that will generate a lot of runs," said Coleman. "We need to work on our defense and pitching, but once we get that straight we will be a very competitive team."
Â
Biola ends the first day of its new season with a 1-0-1 mark while the Golden Eagles fall to 2-1-1. The Eagles are back in action on Saturday with a road doubleheader at Whittier College. Follow the games live with the links on the softball schedule page.
