Box Score 2 LANCASTER, Calif. --- Biola Softball made the dreaded drive to Lancaster on Friday afternoon as it played its first road games since back on Feb. 6. The traveling didn't impact the Eagles too much as they cruised to their fourth and fifth consecutive victories.
Â
Another great outing from
Terri Van Dagens, backed up by just enough offense, led to a 3-1 win in game one, while the bats exploded in an 8-4 game two win over Antelope Valley.
Â
Van Dagens pitcher her fourth complete game of the season as she outdueled the UAV starter, Tabitha Bayers in a game that featured some great pitching in clutch situations.
Â
The Eagles' sophomore allowed six UAV base hits and a walk, but stranded every single runner she let on in innings 1-6 as the game headed into the seventh with a 0-0 score line.
Â
After just four hits through the first six innings Biola's lineup figured Bayers out in the top of the seventh as it put up the first three runs of the game. The scoring began with
Andi Hormel reaching base via a hit-by-pitch and was accelerated by an
Anjie Amezquita double,
Heather Hall RBI single and a run-scoring hit-by-pitch taken by
Kaile Chavez.
Â
The Eagles' third run crossed the plate with two outs as
Areana Ramos pinch-hit for
Iliana Morales and drew a walk with the bases loaded to bring Hall across the plate.
Â
While UAV got to Van Dagens for one run in the bottom half of the seventh the lead was never in doubt as Van Dagens' change up continued to mesmerize the Pioneers' hitters as she finished off her fourth win of the year.
Â
Chavez got the ball in game two and whirled her own dandy of a ballgame behind a much more potent Biola offense. Â She went 5.1 innings as she started, and finished, the Eagles' eighth win of the season to improve to 3-2 herself.
Â
Biola scored five in the fifth, one in the sixth and two in the eighth as it took full advantage of being able to square the ball up better against new pitcher Kiyanna Watley. The Eagles also benefitted from three UAV errors that led to more baserunners and more total bases.
Â
The five-run third inning broke a 0-0 tie and helped the Eagles experience their largest lead in a ballgame since game two against Holy Names two weeks ago.
Â
The five runs in that inning came courtesy four hits and one UAV error with the most damage coming on two-out, two-RBI singles from
Selina Sherlin and Chavez. Sherlin would go 2-for-4 in the game with two RBI and two runs scored. That's a welcomed sign from the sophomore slugger as she had just two hits over the previous six games combined.
Â
With the six-run lead in place Head Coach
Lorie Coleman inserted
Kendall Maddox to pitch in the bottom of the fourth. Maddox had a scoreless first inning of work, but troubles in the fifth inning allowed UAV to score four runs and forced Coleman to go back to Chavez with two outs in the inning and the score now 6-4.
Â
Chavez would get out of the inning and hold the Pioneers to just one hit over the final two innings as she held on for the win.
Â
Biola added its two final runs in the top of the seventh to reach eight runs in a ballgame for the third time this season. The Eagles scored eight in a game 10 times in the 2015 season.
Â
Biola sits at 8-5-1 and is now 7-1 in its last eight outings. The team hosts the Marymount Mariners (2-4) at Freedom Field on Saturday. Times are still TBD as there were problems getting umpires assigned for the games. Check back later Friday night for confirmed game times.
