Box Score 2 WEST COVINA, Calif. --- For the second consecutive day of competition Biola Softball got out of this world pitching performances at the NAIA So. Cal Classic at Big League Dreams West Covina.
Â
The Eagles rode the arms of
Terri Van Dagens,
Kendall Maddox and a little bit of
Kaile Chavez to 4-1 victories over Goshen and Carroll College on Saturday afternoon.
Â
With the two victories the Eagles managed to finish the tournament 3-1 and pull their overall record over .500 for the first time since the first series of the year. Biola now sits at 6-5-1 and is surging with much more confidence than it was just over a week ago.
"The highlight of the weekend was definitely our pitching, which has improved a lot over the last two weeks," said Head Coach
Lorie Coleman.
The day began with a matchup against a Goshen squad that had already been having a tough time at the tournament. Facing last night's winning pitcher, Chavez, did not bode well for the Maple Leafs as they sought to salvage something for their trip out from Indiana.
Â
They managed to squeak a run across in the top of the first inning when their leadoff hitter got hit by a pitch, stole a base and then came home to score after a dropped third strike.
Â
That run's importance was immediately diminished in the bottom half of the inning when
Heather Hall stepped into the box and mashed one over the left field fence. She and
Andi Hormel would score on the big fly to make it 2-1.
Â
That would be all that was really needed as Chavez put up one more scoreless inning before Maddox came in and was lights-out over five no-hit innings of relief. She would face just one batter over the minimum and struck out seven over the course of what was the best appearance to date of her Biola career.
Â
Biola's final two runs of the game came on an
Iliana Morales sacrifice fly and
Anjie Amezquita triple in the third inning.
Maranda Galindo reached in each of her plate appearances as she went 3-for-3 in game one.
Â
Game two followed a fairly similar story as it too was low scoring and featured a tremendous pitching performance. Van Dagens went the complete game to pick up her third victory of the season. She allowed five hits and one run in her seven innings while picking up five strikeouts.
Â
The Eagles fell behind 1-0 in this game as well, and once again it was a
Heather Hall two-RBI hit that gave BU its go-ahead runs. In the third inning the senior singled to push Hormel and Galindo across home plate.
Â
Two more runs came in the top of the fifth as Amezquita and
Kasey Hormel both scored on a weird play that involved a passed ball, throwing error and obstruction call.
Â
Galindo went 2-for-3 in game two to finish the day 5-of-6 with a bunch of bunt singles, a run and two stolen bases as one of the most productive hitters in the Eagles' order.
Â
Biola hits the road for its next series as it travels to Antelope Valley for a Friday doubleheader before returning home to host Marymount for two on Saturday.
