Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 WEST COVINA, Calif. --- Biola Softball was the center of NAIA Softball on the West Coast on Friday as it hosted day one of the NAIA So. Cal Classic at Big League Dreams West Covina.
Â
The Eagles ended up splitting their day one games in two different low-scoring affairs. Biola lost 3-2 in extra-innings against Southern Oregon in the opener and then won 3-2 by way of seventh-inning walkoff against Embry-Riddle in the nightcap.
Â
The story of the day, aside from
Andi Hormel's game-winning hit, has got to be the fantastic starting pitching performances by
Terri Van Dagens in game one and
Kaile Chavez in game two.
Â
Van Dagens was saddled with the tough-luck loss in the first game after she held the Raiders to just two runs scored over the first seven innings of play. Once of those runs came across the plate after a two-out error that brought home an unearned run.
Â
The Raiders won the game when their "free" runner beat the throw to home plate on a one-out dribbler by SOU's Taylor Martinez. This allowed Southern Oregon, the home team by way of coin flip win, to walkoff with a win.
Â
Biola picked up one run in the third on a
Heather Hall RBI single and one more in the seventh on a one-out sacrifice fly, also by Hall.
Â
The Eagles could not get their "free" runner across home plate in the top of the eighth as she was gunned down by the Raiders' second baseman for the second out of the inning.
Â
Game two was all about the great work of freshman Chavez in the circle. She must've been feeling at home since the game was in West Covina and she hails from nearby Covina, because she hurled a whale of a ballgame.
Â
The Embry-Riddle hitters were missing her pitches all night long as she held them to one run through her first six innings of work. After briefly exiting the game she re-entered with the bases loaded and no outs in the top of the seventh and was able to escape by only allowing one run off a sacrifice fly.
Â
All in all she ended with a win, seven innings pitched, five strikeouts and just three hits allowed in a dominating performance.
Â
Chavez was matched through most of the night by Embry-Riddle's starter, Kayla Avram. Avram pitched the whole game and held the Eagles' high-octane offense to just two runs on six hits through the first six innings.
Â
Those two runs came in the second and fourth innings on
Maranda Galindo and
Bria Madrid RBI singles.
Â
Avram began to run out of steam in the seventh as she walked
Kasey Hormel on five pitches with two outs in the frame. Then,
Andi Hormel stepped in and took a pitch to the perfect spot in the gap in right center field that gave her a game-winning RBI double.
Â
Biola's 1-1 day moves the team to 4-5-1 on the new season. Southern Oregon improved to 8-4 with two 3-2 wins over Golden State Athletic Conference teams on Friday. Embry-Riddle fell to 1-7.
Â
The Eagles head back to Big League Dreams on Saturday for a 12:00 p.m. matchup with Goshen (0-2) and a 2:00 p.m. affair with high-scoring Carroll (2-0).
