Box Score 2 LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The excitement of having an archrival back in town faded midway through game number one as No. 20 Biola Softball lost twice, by large margins, to visiting Azusa Pacific on Friday afternoon.
Â
Game one was very competitive early on as
Terri Van Dagens gave the Eagles a great start in the circle. She threw 5.2 innings with relatively no issues, but a two-out rally in the sixth from APU turned a 1-1 ball game into a 6-1 ballgame.
Â
That would be how game one finished up as the Eagles could not get any runs across the plate in the sixth and seventh innings.
Â
Biola's only run came in the bottom of the first inning as a
Selina Sherlin single brought
Heather Hall across the plate to make it 1-0 Biola. Hall reached base via her second double of the season.
Â
Game two only lasted six innings as Azusa Pacific put up eight runs on the Eagles to win the game via the run rule at 8-0.
Â
The game was also tight very early on. Azusa Pacific scored one run in the top of the first, but the Eagles' starter,
Kaile Chavez, was able to hold them to that through the first three innings.
Â
Chavez allowed six hits to the Cougars during her 3.1 innings in the circle. All six of those hits were singles and resulted in four runs for APU.
Â
Kendall Maddox inherited two runners on and a 4-0 score when she came in relief of Chavez in the fourth. She allowed a double to the first batter she faced, which allowed one more run to score, but then she settled in and got out of the inning.
Â
Selina Sherlin and
Kimmy Triolo finished out the game in the circle as APU crossed the plate three more times in the fifth and once in the sixth to build the lead sufficient enough to end the game.
Â
Biola got just two hits in game two and also had two errors in a game where it struggled offensively and defensively. BU also had two errors in the first game.
Â
The Eagles fall to 1-4-1 on the new season and will look to break a four-game losing streak when it hosts Holy Names for a doubleheader beginning at noon on Saturday.
