Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- No. 1 Biola Men's Basketball suffered its first setback of the young season on Saturday afternoon as it fell to William Jessup, 67-61, in the first Golden State Athletic Conference matchup of the year.
Â
The Eagles led the game throughout, holding on to a slim, but firm margin of a couple of points. However, the offense went stagnant for the final six minutes and one second of play. Biola pulled ahead 61-54 with a smooth
Caelan Tiongson layup with 6:01 on the clock and it would be the final two points of the day for this BU squad.
Â
Jessup scored the final 13 points of the game to shock everyone inside of Chase Gymnasium and walk away with their ninth win of the season. The biggest lift to the Warriors was Biola's inability to make its free throws. Biola went just 11-of-24 from the charity stripe to post its lowest free-throw percentage of the year (45 percent).
Â
Up until that final six minutes of play Biola was in the driver's seat thanks to its tenacious defense. The Eagles forced 12 turnovers through the first 30 minutes of play, but could only force two down the stretch.
Â
The Eagles had a hard time getting shots to fall in the second half as they watched their field goal percentage dip from 50 percent through the first 20 minutes to 37 percent in the second 20.
Â
Jessup had the complete opposite as it upped its shooting from 30 percent in the first (just seven made baskets) to 52 percent in the second. The Warriors also made 21 of their 24 attempts at the line to help ice their victory.
Â
Dakari Archer was the biggest threat on the floor all night, ending with 19 points. He even shot 5-of-6 from the line, but even he went cold late and missed his final three attempts of the game.
Â
The good news coming out of this game is that a loss like this can oftentimes polarize a team and get them refocused on the ultimate goal. It's easy to forget this is just the very first conference game of the year and there is a long, long way to go. Also, free throw shooting is something that is fixable and is not going to be this much of a plague to any
Dr. Dave Holmquist coached team.
Â
The Eagles fall to 11-1 (0-1 GSAC), while the visiting Warriors improve to 9-3 (1-0 GSAC). Biola is back in action next week as it hosts Northwest Indian College on Dec. 15. The game tips off at 7:30 p.m. and will be played at Whittier Christian High School on account of Biola's Winter Commencement locking up Chase Gymnasium.
