Biola Grounds The Hawks In Three

The Eagles earn their 12th conference victory of the season with a sweep of SDC.

Box Score SANTEE, Calif. --- No. 19 Biola Volleyball secured its 14th sweep of the season and 22nd win of the year with a 3-0 (25-17,25-14,25-21) victory on the road at San Diego Christian on Thursday evening.

It was the Eagles' second-to-last regular season match of the year and helped the team improve to 12-3 in Golden State Athletic Conference play. The win was also the 400th win for the Biola Volleyball program since Head Coach Aaron Seltzer took over in 2002.

After beginning the first set a bit slow with back-to-back missed attacks the Eagles overtook the lead at 3-2 and never trailed again en route to a 25-17 set victory.

Biola accumulated three blocks in the set, including one by Ally Forsberg and Karly Dantuma that sealed the set-winning point for BU. Those blocks played a role in the Hawks hitting just -.038 as a team in that first set. Blocks and a bunch of balls hit long resulted in eight SDC attack errors and a bunch of free points for Biola.

The Eagles earned 14 of those first-set points with kills of their own, again thanks to a nice variety in attack options. Hannah Van Warmerdam led the way with four kills on six swings, resulting in a .667 attack percentage.

Biola's big win in that set was supported by a great stretch in the middle where BU scored five points in a row and nine of 12 overall to turn a 6-6 tie into a 15-9 advantage.

The blocks and strong hitting continued in the second set as Biola cruised to a 25-14 win and secured a very quick 2-0 advantage in the match. The Eagles got four more blocks and again ended the set with the 25th point coming by way of one.

"We had a lot of blocks. Our timing and game speed was better," said Seltzer. "We did a great job of managing their hitters. It was a good team effort with a lot of energy."

Stephanie Jewett was the shining star in the second set as she secure four of her kills and improved her hitting percentage over .300 by the end of the set.

Alyx Dunham also continued her solid play against her friends from San Diego Christian. The freshman outside had five kills through the first two sets and hit .400.

Biola jumped out to a huge early lead in the third set, but some strong play from San Diego Christian's middle blocker late in the set caused things to get a bit tighter as play went on.

Ultimately the Eagles locked it down by scoring three of the final four points after San Diego Christian forced Seltzer to call a timeout after tightening it to 22-20.

"I thought San Diego played really hard. They grinded it out until the last second, which made it fun," said Seltzer.

The set was ended with Stephanie Jewett's team-leading 10th kill of the match. It was a fantastic evening for the sophomore from Cary, N.C., as she led the team in kills and attacks and managed to keep her hitting percentage at .280. Van Warmerdam (8), Dunham (7) and Dantuma (6) finished right behind her in terms of kills.

"I thought Stephanie played really, really well," said Seltzer. "She was really active, and offensively she was ready to play and was explosive."

Olivia Sorensen ended the evening with just two kills, but her impact was felt as she was in on five of the Eagles' 10 blocks in the match. The senior middle blocker played a big role in holding SDC to just 27 kills while helping force them to 23 attack errors.

Biola improved to 22-9 (12-3 GSAC) while San Diego Christian fell to 12-16 (4-11 GSAC). The Eagles have one more regular season match, which will be next Thursday night at Vanguard (11-19, 7-5 GSAC).
