Eagles Extinguish Oaks In Another Sweep

Biola Volleyball reached 19 victories in 2016 with another 3-0 GSAC win.

Box Score ATHERTON, Calif. --- Biola Volleyball completed its Northern California road trip on Saturday afternoon with another quick 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-23) victory. The win was Biola's fourth consecutive victory, sixth win in the last seven matches and sixth Golden State Athletic Conference win in a row.

With the win the Eagles improved to 2-0 in the season series against the Oaks, with each of those victories coming in straight sets. Menlo put up a good fight in each of the sets, even having the third set tied as late as 23-23, but ultimately Biola turned out to be the better team on the road.

Contrary to last night's contest, when the Eagles managed to sideout immediately on all but nine occasions, the Eagles and Oaks both turned today's game into a game of runs, especially in the first set. There were six different runs of at least three points in a row in the Eagles' 25-20 first set win.

Biola kept that theme going early in the second set as it scored five points in a row to stake a 5-1 lead as it looked to build on the momentum of a set one win. The Oaks managed another good stretch or two of their own to keep the set tight, but Biola won eight of the final 11 points to make the game look a lot less close at 25-18.

Biola's front row was on fire throughout that second set, resulting in a .483 hitting percentage and a match-high 18 kills. Karly Dantuma led the way in that set with her blistering attack efforts resulting in seven of the Eagles' 18 kills.

She would ultimately be the match leader in kills with 18 on her own. She's been exceptional in the last handful of matches with double-digit kills in each of the last four matches and hitting percentages of .350, .389 and .593 in her last three outings.

"Karly on the right side did such a good job controlling her outside blocking that we were able to focus on other areas defensively," said Seltzer. "And as usual our trio of defenders were solid and our serving took away a lot of their options."

Each set had its moments when it felt close, but none was as close as the Eagles' clinching third set. Biola built a convincing 16-10 lead early, but that was completely erased when Biola could not side out for five consecutive points and ended up tying the game at 17.

The Eagles continued to build small lead after small lead after small lead, but they could not completely hold off the pesky Oaks and a BU attack error let Menlo tie things at 23. After a timeout to talk things over Head Coach Aaron Seltzer's crew came out focused and locked down the match by winning the final two points.

Senior Olivia Sorensen was a part of both of those points as she landed a kill to put BU ahead 24-23 and then paired with Hannah van Warmerdam to end the match on a block.

Van Warmerdam had a great game once again as she was second on the team with 12 kills and led the team with an incredible six service aces. The Eagles out-aced the Oaks 11-6 with van Warmerdam playing a large part in that. For perspective, she came into the match with five total aces this year.

"Hannah played so solid today," said Seltzer. "She served lights out and was so consistent."

Biola improved to 19-8 (10-2 GSAC) with the win and Menlo fell to 12-14 (4-8 GSAC) following their home loss. The Eagles head back home for a massive match on this coming Wednesday as they host No. 1 Westmont (16-0, 11-0 GSAC) at 7:00 p.m. It will be a Red Sea night as all Biola fans are encouraged to wear red.
