Box Score ATHERTON, Calif. --- For the second game in a row Biola Men's Basketball was a bit slow to get its offensive game going, but this time its defense bailed it out down the stretch in a 62-51 road win over Menlo.
Â
The Oaks led this one until the 10:10 minute of the first half, which is when the Eagles began a 8-point run that swung the pendulum in the other direction and gave Biola the lead it would hold onto for the rest of the game.
Â
The first half was a slow going one as both teams chipped away at one another and ended with just a four-point margin at the halftime break. The second half got started with a flurry though as the Eagles scored the first eight points to open up a 10-point advantage with just over 18 to play.
Â
That was the largest lead that either side would get in this one as the game was played within four or five points for much of the rest of the second frame. The Oaks would get as close as within two points, but each time they'd find a way to get close Biola would to just enough to hold onto an advantage.
Â
It was not until inside of the two-minute mark that the Eagles would extend their lead by making a big three-pointer and hitting free throws each time the Oaks attempted to stop the clock with a foul.
Â
Free throws were key to the win as Biola went 20-of-25 from the line to score six more points off of free throws than Menlo was able to gather.
Dakari Archer was 8-of-9,
Jeff Gonzalez was 4-of-4 and
Trevor Treinen was 3-of-4 as all of the Eagles' regular scorers came up clutch.
Â
Treinen was impressive throughout the night as he led the team's effort with eight first-half points and also contributed in the second period to push to a total of 14 points. He was 3-of-6 from beyond the arc to help contribute from deep on a night when that was definitely not the strong suit of the Eagles' offensive effort.
Â
Archer led the team with 16 points and
Terrell Funches also went for double-digits with 14. Gonzalez was perfect from the field (2-of-2) en route to his eight point, six rebound effort.
Â
Menlo shot under 30 percent in the second half and fell victim to Biola's blockers all night long. The Eagles posted a season-best seven blocks in the game led by
Caelan Tiongson's three.
Â
Biola is back in the win column with the 11-point win and improves to 18-2 (5-1 GSAC), while the Oaks fall to 7-12 (1-5 GSAC). The Eagles are at last back inside of Chase Gymnasium on Tuesday night for a big showdown with Vanguard. The game will be a Red Sea Night where Biola fans are encouraged to wear their red.
