Box Score ROCKLIN, Calif. --- Last week's win over No. 24 Vanguard put the entire conference on alert that William Jessup was a men's basketball team on the rise. It proved that once again on Thursday night in an upset victory over 65-69 No. 10 Biola.
Â
Ryan Swain scored the first seven points of the game for Biola as the Eagles rushed out to a 7-2 lead over the Warriors through the first three minutes. Then the Warriors scored nine of the next 11 points to take their first lead of the game at 11-9 at the 10:10 mark in the first half.
Â
That run was one of two major stretches of scoring that would end up keying the William Jessup win that handed Biola just its second loss of the 2015-16 season.
Â
Terrell Funches did all he could to help the Eagles get back in the game over the rest of the first half. He scored 10 points in the final 10 minutes to carry the team to a 30-24 halftime lead.
Â
The second half started well as Biola built its lead up to nine points with just over 13 to play. It was a
Steve Herve free throw that extended to the game-high lead, but Herve would score just two more points in the rest of the game as the Eagles' scoring slowed way, way down over the rest of the second half.
Â
Biola was held to just 14 points over the final 13 minutes as William Jessup's defense improved and the Warriors got hot from beyond the arc to flip the script on the game.
Â
The Eagles had two different possessions in the final minute and a half that would've been critical in a comeback attempt as
Jeff Gonzalez and others piled on offensive rebounds. Unfortunately, the shots were not falling and the Eagles fell short of a comeback for the first time since Nov. 21.
Â
Funches was the Eagles' leading scorer with 21 points in the losing effort. He was 10-of-18 from the floor and added 11 rebounds for his double-double of the season.
Dakari Archer ended with 13 and Swain ended with nine as the Eagles' next leading scorers.
Â
It was a clean game overall with neither team piling on too many fouls or turnovers, but what really hurt the Eagles was the inability to make its shots from behind the arc (2-of-17) and the poor second half shooting percentage (38%).
Â
The loss drops BU to 17-2 (4-1 GSAC) and drops the team to second place in the GSAC. The Warriors improve to 11-5 (3-2 GSAC) with the win. Biola's road trip continues on Saturday with a late afternoon contest at Menlo.
