Box Score IRVINE, Calif. --- Finishing up one game and rolling immediately into another is never an easy task, but add in the fact that the first game was a back-and-forth emotional roller coaster and you're now facing the No. 4 team in the country and that's a really tough task.
Â
That's what faced No. 18 Biola as it entered play in the 2015 Golden State Athletic Conference Softball Tournament Championship with Concordia on Saturday afternoon. Biola needed to beat CUI twice in order to secure a tournament championship, but perhaps more important to the team on this day was the national tournament berth it wrapped up with its morning win. That was evidenced by a very unconventional starting lineup and an effort in the field that produced a 0-12 loss to the defending champion Concordia squad.
Â
Head Coach
Lorie Coleman made the decision to sit all three of her All-GSAC players and give
Terri Van Dagens a rare start in a game to the naked eye would seem very important. However, more important at this point in the season, especially with the obstacles this team has already overcome is resting its regulars.
Â
Despite the unconventional approach Biola managed to keep the game close throughout most of the game before Concordia unleashed its top-ranked offense at all the right moments and took advantage of some fielding mishaps to add seven runs in the top of the sixth to pull far away.
Â
Brittani McGue again had her way with the BU hitters, holding Biola to just two hits over her six innings of work. She struck out five and walked just two in her second win over BU in as many days.
Â
Kendall Maddox had a great performance in a middle relief role. She went 4.1 innings and allowed six runs, but that number is deceiving because of the four runs that scored in her one-third of an inning in the sixth. From the second through the fifth she allowed just two runs to the high-octane CUI offense and kept Biola relatively close.
Â
Concordia wrapped up the championship one inning early after Biola went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the sixth succumbing to a run-rule loss. Biola's season record dropped to 34-18, while CUI improved to 49-6.
Â
While a GSAC Tournament Championship would've been a nice addition, Biola is now focused on the bigger picture as it and Concordia will both advance to the NAIA National Tournament out of the GSAC. The seedings and opening round locations will be announced via a live selection show on May 7 at 7:00 p.m. CDT/5:00 p.m. PDT.
