Box Score 2 LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The top two teams in the Golden State Athletic Conference had their final showdown of the 2015 regular season at Freedom Field on Tuesday, with the No. 3 Concordia Eagles coming out on top in both contests.
Â
The first game saw an offensive explosion from CUI that resulted in a 12-1 final score, while the second game was a much more even matchup, going down to the wire before Concordia edged out a 2-0 win.
Â
Reba DePriest struck out two-of-three batters in a perfect first inning in the opener, but that was the only part of that game that was anywhere near perfect. The visiting Eagles would go on to score their 12 runs off 14 hits and capitalize on three Biola errors in a blowout.
Â
CUI benefitted from the long ball, bashing two homeruns that equated to five of the 12 runs that crossed the plate. Concordia's starter pitched the complete game and held Biola to just five hits and one unearned run. BU's lone run came in the fourth when
Amanda Lillicrop parlayed her first career steal into her first career run.
Â
Game two was a much more competitive affair, and it had the noteworthy moment where DePriest broke her own Biola single-season record for strikeouts by notching her 234
th batter of the season in the fifth inning.
Â
The game was still locked in a scoreless tie at that point and DePriest struck out one more batter to end the top of the fifth and get Biola back in the box for another chance to make some offense against CUI starter Grayson Harvey.
Â
The Eagles were getting on Harvey throughout the start, peppering hits a base runners throughout the first few innings, but could not to much to advance runners around the base paths.
Â
This frustration came to a head in the bottom of the sixth, when Biola loaded the bases with no outs in an attempt to take control of the game again after CUI scored once in the top of the sixth.
Â
After getting the bases full a fielder's choice groundout, strikeout and groundout ended the inning and stranded all three runners, leaving the home team with just three offensive outs to work with.
Â
Concordia tacked on one more in the seventh off a homerun, their third of the afternoon, and the weight of the comeback rested on the top of the Eagles' batting order in the bottom of the seventh.
Â
While Biola could not mount any runs, the highlight of the final inning was
Brooke Madrid coming up with a hard-hit single in her final at-bat at Freedom Field. She was 2-for-4 in game two as she continues to see her batting average spike upward at the end of the season.
Â
With the two victories Concordia clinched the regular season GSAC title, and it is up to Biola and Vanguard to battle for the No. 2 spot in their series this weekend. The two teams are tied with a 14-8 conference mark at this point.
Â
Biola moves to 30-16 (14-8 GSAC) with the two losses and CUI improves to 45-5 (19-3 GSAC).
Â
Biola begins play at Vanguard on Saturday at noon.
