HIGHLIGHTS & INTERVIEWS

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Fans expecting a pitchers' duel in Friday's matchup between Biola and William Jessup were not disappointed. After Biola's Reba DePriest won the Golden State Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week award on Mar. 30, William Jessup's Shelbi Graifman received the same honor for last week's work and they went head-to-head in game one of today's doubleheader split.

William Jessup won the duel 1-0, while Biola's offense broke out in the second game to get a 5-3 win.

The Warriors scored the only run of game one in the fifth inning after Racie Carrel's hit to the outfield resulted in a double and an RBI. The Eagles came close to tying the game in the bottom of the 6th when senior Amanda Lillicrop reached on a Warrior error, advanced to second and moved Kasey Hormel to third base, but nothing came of the opportunity.

Head coach Lorie Coleman hopes Lillicrop's speed will help her become an effective bunter. Lillicrop spent four seasons on Biola Women's Soccer and just got brought onto the softball team last week.

"We're one school and one spirit and we serve one God and we're all in it together and rooting for each other," said Coleman.

This was the Eagles' first loss at home since Feb. 24, when they dropped both games to Vanguard early in GSAC play.

"Due to a lot of injuries, we're having to sort out a lineup," said Coleman. "They weren't really in a rhythm the first game. I think we needed a game just to figure it out again."

The Eagles came out with more fire in game two, scoring all five of their runs in the first two innings. Hormel had RBI singles in both the first and second inning, and senior outfielder Brooke Madrid had a standout batting performance, hitting 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored. She lined one to the outfield in her second at-bat, which brought in two runs in the bottom of the second. She now has 14 RBI on the season.

"I saw a senior that stepped up. She [Madrid] knew we needed the win," Coleman said. "She knew somebody needed to represent and be solid."

The sixth inning was a scare for the Eagles when the Warriors had the bases loaded and only one out, but a run was actually called back after an error with WJU's lineup was reported, resulting in the second out. DePriest re-entered the game for sophomore Kimmy Triolo and struck out the next batter, bringing the first half of the inning to a close. DePriest now has 215 strikeouts this season, getting 13 in her complete game loss in the opener and adding two in 2.1 innings in game two.

William Jessup scored one run in the first, sixth and seventh innings to reach three in the second game, but it was not enough. Triolo went 4.2 innings and allowed just one run, getting credit for the win (6-5).

As the team's next game is on its senior day, Coleman wants the Eagles to remain concentrated on the task at hand and not get preoccupied with the celebration.

"We don't want to get caught up and distracted. We're going to try to stay focused," Coleman said.

The Eagles face San Diego Christian tomorrow, April 18, in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
