Box Score 2 FULLERTON, Calif. --- After suffering a hit in the latest NAIA Top-25 Coaches' Poll, the No. 20 Eagles took their frustrations out on Hope International by outhitting, outfielding and outpitching the Royals in a doubleheader sweep on Saturday.
Â
Biola took game one via the run-rule, winning 8-0 in five innings, and it continued the shutout streak in the nightcap with a 4-0 victory.
Â
Selina Sherlin got things started early in the first game, rocketing her eighth homerun of the season over the left field fence on the first pitch she saw on the afternoon. She's now tied for the team-lead in HR with
Heather Hall.
Â
That big fly came in the second inning of the opener, where
Sarah Stromwall got her fantastic day at the dish started with a RBI single that scored
Kasey Hormel to get
Reba DePriest a 2-0 lead through 1.5 innings.
Â
DePriest didn't even need that big of a lead as she was definitely on point in this one. She would work through the first three innings with ease, holding the Royals without a hit and striking out six before
Kimmy Triolo came in to be just as effective over the two final innings. She allowed the one hit that kept this one from being truly historic.
Â
"Whenever Reba's pitching she gives us an opportunity to win a ballgame," said Head Coach
Lorie Coleman. "She holds them down."
Â
While they kept the Royals' offense quiet, the HIU pitching staff had a difficult time keeping Eagles off the base paths. Biola exploded for six runs in the third, coming off three hits and an infield error.
Â
The big damage came in the form of a two-out, three-RBI double off the bat of Stromwall that made the game 7-0. Triolo would reach on an error and push home Stromwall to bring the game to it's final score.
Â
Stromwall's four RBI in the opener equaled two-thirds of her season total entering this series. She would not stop there though, serving as a key piece to the Eagles' offense again in game two.
Â
"It was our goal to be more offensively effective, and our offense stepped up and did that today," said Coleman. "We were pleased to produce runs, and our pitchers did a great job in keeping it scoreless throughout the day."
Â
The second contest saw another great pitching performance from DePriest, who went five innings of one-hit ball to get her second win of the day and improve to 18-4 on the season. Her six strikeouts in the second outing brought her to an even 200 on the season.
Â
She was backed up by an early run off an
Ashley Spadt double and three more that came just before she came out of the game in the top of the sixth inning.
Â
Stromwall's second double of the afternoon brought home Spadt and Hormel before
Iliana Morales singled on a full count to bring Biola's senior shortstop across the plate to finish off the scoring.
Â
With the lead extended DePriest came out and
Terri Van Dagens hurled the final two innings. She too held HIU to just one hit and struck out two more in a strong outing.
Â
Biola looks to back in top form and improves to 28-12 (12-4 GSAC) while Hope International drops to 8-41 (0-18 GSAC).
Â
The Eagles are back in action with a home doubleheader against William Jessup (16-22, 8-10 GSAC) on Friday afternoon.
