Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 SAN MARCOS, Calif. --- It seems as if the Eagles' offensive firepower is fluctuating just about every other series to this point in the season, and Thursday was no different as the squad scores just four runs in a doubleheader split at No. 12 CSU San Marcos.
Â
The Eagles were shut down by the Cougars' ace in the opener, losing 0-1, but got some early production and rode their own arms to a 4-1 lead in the concluding game.
Â
Reba DePriest got the start in game one and had immediate trouble finding the strike zone, walking the bases loaded in the first inning and walking more in the second to allow runners to reach scoring position. However, she used her filthy stuff to work her way out of both jams and exited after 2.2 innings with a ton of pitches thrown, but no hits and no runs allowed despite the seven walks.
Â
The lone run of the game came off of
Kimmy Triolo in the fifth inning as CSUSM used a two-out walk, wild pitch and single to manufacture the run. That would be all the scoring as BU got just four hits off of Ashley Dagenais who went the distance to improve to 10-2 on the year. Triolo dropped to 2-2 with the loss.
Â
Game two saw
Terri Van Dagens get the start and a bit of a spark to the Eagles' offensive effort right off the bat to spot her a lead.
Brooke Madrid reached on an error with one out and moved up after a ball got by the Cougars' catcher. A
Heather Hall single, one of three in the game, advanced her to third, where a
Selina Sherlin sacrifice fly pushed her home to grab a 1-0 lead.
Â
CSUSM answered back immediately as their center fielder led off the game with a double and would later score on a single to knot the game at one.
Â
The Eagles' got two more in the top of the second, seemingly seeing the ball a lot better from the second Cougars' pitcher.
Ashley Spadt started the offense with a single, got moved over by a
Sarah Stromwall sacrifice bunt and pushed home by
Kasey Hormel's single.
Bria Madrid followed that immediately with an RBI single of her own, scoring the Washington import.
Â
After the lead was extended DePriest came in to hold down the No. 12 Cougars' bats. Head Coach
Lorie Coleman knew she'd need to rely on the senior flamethrower since CSU San Marcos had the No. 1 homerun hitter in the NAIA on their side, Naomi Amu (10 HR).
Â
The Eagles' staff held her at bay by walking her six times in the two games, not allowing her a single official at bat.
Â
DePriest finished with a scoreless six innings of work, allowing just two more hits to CSUSM, but she did again struggle with her location, walking four more batters with just six strikeouts.
Â
In the end, her effort was enough, as a Hall double would push through one more run for the Eagles and secure the 4-1 win to improve Biola to 15-7 and DePriest to 9-2. Biola returns to Freedom Field on Saturday for a doubleheader with Hope International (7-18, 0-4 GSAC).
