Bats Run Dry In The Desert

Biola splits a doubleheader with UAV, winning one 1-0 and losing one 1-0.

Reba DePriest shut down UAV in game two, using 11 strikeouts to record her 13th win of the year.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LANCASTER, Calif. --- There was not much offense to be had in the Antelope Valley this afternoon, as the two teams combined for just two runs in a doubleheader split.

The Pioneers of the University of Antelope Valley scored a late run off a Chelsea Eli-Kido triple to win 1-0 in the opener and Biola got a run off a Sarah Stromwall RBI single in the second inning to get the 1-0 win in game two.

The No. 16 Eagles move to 22-10 with the win and loss and the Pioneers move to 12-22. Biola splits the season series with UAV, 2-2, after splitting a home doubleheader earlier in the season.

The pitching is clearly what stood out on this day, as Biola got just one legitimate scoring opportunity in the opener and Kendall Maddox and Reba DePriest held the Pioneers without any trouble in the second go-around.

Tabitha Bayers shut down Biola's bats in the early game, throwing a complete game shutout and allowing the Eagles just three base hits. Biola's only chance to score came in the top of the fifth inning, when it was still a 0-0 game and Bria Madrid doubled with two outs and got pushed to third off a Brooke Madrid single. A flyout stranded both runners and eventually left Biola staring at an unexpected loss.

Terri Van Dagens and Kimmy Triolo pitched just as well as Bayers, holding UAV to just five base runners over six innings, but Triolo made the one mistake pitch that allowed Eli-Kido to pick up the game-winning RBI.

Game two was a similar storyline with a different ending. Both teams struggled to find base runners, but the Pioneers had just a bit more difficult time than the Eagles, especially once DePriest entered the game in the third inning.

The senior power pitcher had her way with the UAV lineup, accumulating 11 strikeouts in her 5.0 scoreless innings of work. This 11-strikeout tally included a stretch between the fourth and sixth innings where she struck out eight consecutive batters.

Biola got its lead when Maddox was still in the circle, following a lead-off walk with two singles to bring home Anjie Amezquita in the top of the second inning. The RBI was Stromwall's first since March 7 and fifth of the season.

The Eagles' busy week continues on Friday as they host Arizona Christian at 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. Biola took both games of a road doubleheader in Phoenix earlier this season, outscoring the Firestorm 15-7.
