The Eagles Have Grounded

Biola beat La Sierra for the third and fourth times this season and got its second run-rule win.

Kasey Hormel had the biggest hit on the day, hitting a bases-clearing triple in game one.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- Coming off an unexpected loss to a under-performing opponent, No. 14 Biola looked to avoid a repeat performance in Friday's doubleheader against La Sierra, a team that came into play 3-11.

Avoid it they did, as Biola earned it's second run rule victory of the season in an 11-2 win in game one and rode the arms of Terri Van Dagens and Reba DePriest to a 7-1 win in the second outing.

"After our 12th game of season we went over our lineup to see what would be most profitable for us," said Head Coach Lorie Coleman. "We were leaving of runners on base, so our goal was to not leave anyone on base."

Today, the Eagles accomplished that goal with nearly flawless execution on Friday, resulting in its 18 runs and improving its record to 4-0 against La Sierra this season.

The team exploded in the opener, with a little help from a few defensive misplays by the Golden Eagles. Heather Hall and Kasey Hormel highlighted what was a productive performance up and down the Eagles' lineup. Hall was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI and Hormel was 2-for-2 with a run and two RBI.

Hormel got her first triple of the season in her first at bat of the day, driving in the Eagles' second and third runs of the game, which would ultimately represent the winning run.

Those runs came in support of dynamite pitching duo in the form of starter Kimmy Triolo and closer Reba DePriest. The pair combined for six innings of six-hit ball and struck out seven Golden Eagles hitters.

"We're still trying to figure out our starting rotation, and today we saw that starting with Kimmy and closing with Reba was pretty legit," said Coleman.

The only issue Triolo or DePriest had with the LSU offense was in a two-run third inning, where a single and hit-by-pitch were followed by a two-out 2-RBI double, which kept the Eagles away from a shutout.

Five of Biola's 11 runs were unearned runs, coming off of La Sierra's four errors, including two with two outs.

Game two saw Terri Van Dagens get the ball to start the game. She had another strong outing to lower her team-leading ERA to 1.48. The freshman went three scoreless innings in another game that saw her get backed up by a great defense.

"Any time that Terri is in the circle our defense has a lot more confidence because she is so calm and poised out there," said Coleman. "Our defense becomes a lot more consistent and it gives momentum to our offense."

That offensive momentum resulted in seven runs for Biola scattered across the first, fourth, sixth and seventh innings. The Eagles scored in all but five of the 13 innings played in this doubleheader.

Brooke Madrid, Anjie Amezquita and Iliana Morales highlighted the production in the second game, each having a hand in at least two runs. Madrid was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI and both Amezquita and Morales had two RBI.

Amezquita and Morales profited from Coleman switching around the lineup, by getting a chance to get up in key situations at produce, and they definitely made the most of it this afternoon, proving their skill and ability to get hits for the team.

Those players fit the playing style that Coleman and the rest of the coaching staff was looking for at the plate on Friday, as after a week full of frustrating quick flyouts, the staff wanted all the batters to hit balls on the ground.

That mission was accomplished, leading to plenty of base knocks, and even more telling, more outs via the ground that via the air.

With the two wins Biola improves to 10-4 on the year headed into its first Golden State Athletic Conference series of the season. Biola hosts Vanguard for two games on Tuesday Feb. 24 at 1:30 p.m.
