Box Score 2 LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Back at home after a rough conclusion to an otherwise decent weekend, Biola was hungry to get a win in its Tuesday doubleheader with the University of Antelope Valley. It did just that, clamoring to a 6-0 victory behind fantastic pitching in game one, but it was surprised and upset in game two after a bunch of mental mistakes lead to a 2-5 loss to the Pioneers.
Game one had pops of offense, but its big highlight was the definite assertion of dominance by
Terri Van Dagens, as the freshman hurled six shutout innings to earn her second victory of the season.
Â
She was slicing through the Pioneers' lineup with no difficulty whatsoever, getting two outs in the inning before allowing a hit in every inning she pitched, and not allowing her first hit until two outs in the fourth.
Â
Kimmy Triolo closed out her strong outing with a hitless seventh, completing the staff shutout.
Â
The Eagles' pitchers were backed up by a solid defense, no errors, and flashes of the offense Biola boasted on Friday in three wins at the Simpson Tournament.
Â
Biola opened the scoring on a strange play that saw
Kasey Hormel reach base safely on an infield single,
Iliana Morales score and
Sarah Stromwall get caught at third base to end the second inning.
Â
The Eagles tacked on one more in the third before the next bit of offense was a little more pronounced.
Heather Hall was 1-for-2 on the day when she took the box against Tabitha Bayers, UAV's second and harder-throwing pitcher. She worked a 1-1 count before ripping one to just about straightaway center field for a two-run homerun that gave Biola a 4-0 lead.
Â
An
Ashley Spadt double in that same inning helped the Eagles reach the eventual final score of 6-0. She drove in Morales and
Anjie Amezquita for her fourth and fifth RBI of the season. Morales had a fine day in a spot start, reaching base twice, scoring twice and recording five putouts.
Â
Game two was not so friendly to the Eagles' bats or its pitching staff.
Kendall Maddox got the start and worked her way into some trouble once the third inning rolled around, forcing Head Coach
Lorie Coleman to get Van Dagens back into the circle.
Â
The freshman seemed to still have it, as she worked out of the jam she was brought into allowing just one run, but things would change quickly in her second inning of work.
Â
Van Dagens began the fourth by striking out the Pioneers' leadoff batter, but after back-to-back-to-back singles found herself against a wall. A passed ball allowed two runs to score and saw a 2-1 Biola lead, courtesy a
Selina Sherlin double, turn into a UAV advantage.
Â
Another single gave Antelope Valley a 4-2 lead and got Bayers all the support she would need in a seven-inning, two-run win for the junior.
Â
The game two victory was UAV's first-ever win over a ranked opponent.
Â
Biola moves to 8-4 on the season after the split and will look to right the ship with its Friday doubleheader against La Sierra before returning home to begin its Golden State Athletic Conference season against Vanguard on Feb. 24.
