Box Score 3 REDDING, Calif. --- Spending Valentine's Day in Redding left 14 Biola women with broken hearts as Biola loses three games on day two of the Simpson Tournament after mustering just four combined runs.
Â
"We got plenty of hits today, but we just couldn't string enough of them together or get the hits in timely situations," said Head Coach
Lorie Coleman.
Â
Game one was a nightmare for the Eagles as they squared off with the No. 15 Concordia (OR) Cavaliers in what should have been a very close game.
Â
The Cavaliers got to
Kimmy Triolo and
Reba DePriest for 10 runs, all earned, in the first four innings and eventually won by eight-run rule by leading 10-2 after Biola's half of the fifth.
Â
The Eagles got one run in the third when
Bria Madrid absolutely clobbered a ball over the left field fence, and added another in the fifth when a
Brooke Madrid sacrifice fly plated
Heather Hall.
Â
That was definitely not enough to overcome the Cavaliers' potent offense that got 12 hits off Biola's pitchers in just four innings.
Â
"We just did not have it at all in that first game," said Coleman.
Â
Games two and three had a much different note for Biola as
Terri Van Dagens,
Reba DePriest and the Eagles' defenders all righted the ship and had the Eagles in good position to win both games.
Â
The offense was again the downfall in a 1-2 extra-inning loss to Corban (OR) and a 1-2 loss to Southern Oregon, where the Raiders came back in their last offensive inning to get the victory.
Â
Van Dagens threw five innings of four-hit ball in the middle game, striking out five and walking just one as the freshman continues to get used to facing collegiate hitters.
Â
The one run she allowed knotted the game at one after
Bria Madrid began the bottom of the first inning with her second homerun of the day to give the Eagles their first lead of the day.
Â
Unfortunately, it was a throwing error from Madrid in the eighth inning that allowed the Warriors' free runner, due to international tiebreak rules, to score the game-winning run.
Â
DePriest finished off game two for the Eagles with three solid innings of work, but was saddled with the loss after the error, dropping to 4-1 on the year.
Â
The third game was another nail-biter as everyone following along was waiting at the edge of their seat to see when Biola's explosive offense it's been exhibiting would breakout.
Â
It never did.
Â
The Eagles were able to stay in control through most of the game thanks to another great appearance for Van Dagens. She started the game and went three shutout innings, allowing just three base runners
Â
"Terri was fantastic today," said Coleman. "The combination and her and Reba closing was phenomenal, we just didn't give them enough support. I cannot complain whatsoever with our defense and pitching."
Â
Â
Biola grabbed a 1-0 lead for her in the third inning, when
Heather Hall recorded her 11
th RBI of the year by doubling home
Bria Madrid.
Â
That lead held up until the bottom half of the sixth, when Southern Oregon was able to get hits off of DePriest, who came in in the fourth, for the first time.
Â
After two quick groundouts, DePriest walked a batter and allowed back-to-back doubles and was all of a sudden in position for another loss with a 1-2 deficit.
Â
Anjie Amezquita singled to open Biola's final inning of offense, but three quick outs after that solidified the Eagles' third loss of the day.
Â
This disappointing day drops Biola to 7-3 overall and has them looking forward to returning home on Tuesday for two games against Antelope Valley, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
