DUNKS AND BLOCKS.
LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola's five-game losing streak is feeling more and more like a distant memory after the Eagles had one of their best displays of team basketball this season in a 78-60 win over William Jessup.
Â
The game was never in doubt as Biola dominated on both ends from the opening tip. The first basket of the game came from a thunderous
Steve Herve dunk, and the Eagles' athleticism did not stop there.
Â
Biola's bigs, and
Pierre Zook, combined for nine blocks on the night, stuffing the Warriors for the third-most blocks in a game in this program's long and illustrious history.
Â
Five of those swats came courtesy
Mike Kurtz, who after a slow offensive start used the slam-dunk as a means to get his 11
th double-double of the year. He coupled the front half of back-to-back dunks with Herve and a monstrous alley-oop fed by
Grant Corsi to end the game with 12 points and a team-high 13 rebounds.
Â
The Eagles were solid all around, outrebounding the Warriors 39-26 and outshooting them by 24 percent. Biola was over 60 percent from the field, its best mark of the season, going 28-of-46 from the floor. The hot shooting enabled the Eagles to get the 18-point win despite firing 15 fewer shots than the Warriors.
Â
"It was a good team win for us," said Head Coach
Dr. Dave Holmquist. "We had improvement in rebounding and defensive intensity. We had more energy and some guys shot the ball really well."
Â
Herve contributed 4-of-4 shooting to the Eagles' percentage from the floor. His post moves were on-point, resulting in two dunks and two easy money lay-ins. He ended with 12 points as well.
Â
Zook and
Dakari Archer were their usual fantastic selves, combining for 38 of Biola's 78 points. Zook was 5-of-7 from deep, marking his seventh game this season with at least five makes from distance. It was his second straight such outing.
Â
Archer compiled his 21 points in a quiet, but effective manner. He made one step-back three, six layups and was 6-of-10 from the free-throw line, remaining inside the top-15 in the Golden State Athletic Conference with a .711 free-throw percentage. He's one of seven players in the conference with at least 100 attempts from the stripe this season.
Â
The Eagles played just eight men in this convincing conference victory, with
Christian Misi,
Blake Shannon, Jr. and
Caelan Tiongson as the only players seeing time off the bench.
Â
Tiongson was the most effective of the bunch, making three shots from the field, including a triple, to post seven points and three boards in his 14 minutes on the court.
Â
"Our goal was to really improve the defense and rebounding, and we know other good things will follow," said Holmquist. "I think that's beginning to happen as we pick up our focus and concentration. I hope we can sustain that."
Â
The Eagles move into a tie for sixth place in the conference after the win, improving to 15-8 (3-6 GSAC) in Holmquist's 890
th win. The Warriors are tied with Biola, featuring a 12-10 (3-6 GSAC) record after the loss.
Â
Biola has three straight road games before returning to Chase Gym, beginning at Arizona Christian on Tuesday Feb. 3.
