Eagles Drop Early Game, But Still Have Life

Biola suffered an unexpected loss to San Diego Christian in a 5-3 GSAC Tournament opener.

Reba DePriest threw a solid game, but gets saddled with the loss after some fielding mishaps made a difference.
Box Score IRVINE, Calif. --- Biola began its journey at the 2014 Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament with a challenging draw against the third-seed, San Diego Christian.

The Hawks used timely hitting early on to utilize some Biola fielding gaffes and build a lead that the Eagles could not overcome, and they went on to get a 5-3 win. The Hawks scored their first run in the first inning after a costly two-out error at shortstop kept the inning alive.

Heather Hall provided the offense for Biola, as she brought her big bat to the game and hit one out of the park in the third inning to get two RBI and make it a 4-2 game.

The Eagles' other run came courtesy of a Kasey Hormel sacrifice fly in the fourth inning. That would be all they could tack on as they simply could not push home runners, despite multiple opportunities with a few runners on.

A turning point in the game came in the fifth inning, when the Hawks pitcher, Josie Tucker, walked two Eagles to open the Biola half of the inning. However, two groundouts led to two impressive plays at third base to retire the lead runner and keep Biola from scoring, essentially stunting the momentum that seemed to be building in the Eagles' favor.

"We have to play the game correctly. We had an opportunity to advance runners and we just did not hit well situationally," said Head Coach Lorie Coleman. "Also, it was Sarah's first game back, so she had some first-inning jitters before she worked that all out and ended up playing well."

Reba DePriest gave up another run to SDC in the top of the sixth on a Tiffany Fox double, solidifying the Hawks' advantage and an all-around fantastic game for SDC's right fielder.

"Hats off to San Diego Christian," said Biola Head Coach Lorie Coleman. "They positioned their right fielder so well and she just killed us with great plays all game long."

Tucker went the distance for San Diego Christian to become the winning pitcher and improve to 10-9 on the season. DePriest gets the tough-luck loss after the two-run difference came via unearned runs and drops to 16-2 overall.

She will start the second game of the day as Biola faces Hope International at Concordia at 2 p.m. for the chance to stay alive in the tournament.
