Box Score 2 LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola continued its streak of lights-out pitching performances to begin the season by completely shutting down La Sierra on Tuesday afternoon.
Â
It was the Eagles' first true home action of the season, and they owned at Freedom Field, winning both games of the doubleheader, including one in walkoff fashion.
Â
"We prepared and did not take this team lightly at all," said Head Coach
Lorie Coleman. "We brought the best game we could and stuck with our gameplan, which we executed very well."
Â
It took longer than the allotted seven innings for Biola to notch a win in the first game, but eventually an
Ashley Spadt single in the bottom of the eighth scored
CeCe Luster and broke the scoreless tie to give Biola its third win of the year.
Â
Luster was not the pitcher of record in this game, but she did put in a fantastic start, going exactly four innings and striking out five while allowing just one hit. She was followed up by
Reba DePriest, who picked up her first win of the season after striking out six over the course of a perfect four innings of work.
Â
"We have stuck with our plan of splitting half the game between CeCe and Reba, and it has been successful so far," said Coleman.
Â
It was so successful that the Golden Eagles never got anything going offensively in the first game, mustering just one hit, with one other runner reaching on an error.
Â
The Eagles got six hits in the contest, but could not push forward any runs until it mattered the most, when Spadt stepped up in the eighth. She was the perfect player to have come to the plate in that situation, as she was absolutely on fire. She was 4-4 in the contest and is now hitting .583 on the year.
Â
Game two was another solid win for the Eagles, as they defeated the Golden Eagles, 4-0. Luster and DePriest combined for eight strikeouts and surrendered just three hits to the La Sierra offense. Biola made the Golden Eagles look like a different team from the one that beat Vanguard and nearly upset Concordia last week.
Â
The Eagles spaced their scoring throughout the second game, and had a more consistent offensive attack as they picked up six hits yet again. Two of their runs came off of unforced errors by the La Sierra squad, including one off an illegal pitch call, which plagued the Golden Eagles' pitchers all day long.
Â
A huge positive for biola came in the fifth inning when their fourth, and final, run of the contest was pushed in by a
Kimmy Triolo triple. It was the freshman's second RBI, and she is a perfect 3-3 on the season.
Â
"Kimmy is a pitcher, but she is a great hitter at the same time," said Coleman. "She is a very strong hitter who will get a lot of at bats, because she is very effective, especially with runners in scoring position."
Â
Luster got the win in game two to move her to 3-0 on the season. She has thrown her way to a 0.98 ERA over her 14.1 innings of work.
Â
Biola is now 4-0 on the year and in possession of first place in the Golden State Athletic Conference. The two losses drop La Sierra to just 1-7.
Â
The Eagles take the diamond again on Thursday with a doubleheader at William Jessup, and then they play six games over the course of Friday and Saturday at the Simpson University Tournament.
