Box Score 2 IRVINE, Calif. --- Biola's reconstructed offense got off to a flying start on Friday, picking up 24 hits and scoring 18 runs in a two-game sweep of Southern Oregon.
Â
CeCe Luster highlighted the great start to the 2014 season by picking up two wins from inside the circle and notching her first big fly of the year. The senior picked up four hits, scored four runs and knocked in three more to begin the year with a 1.143 slugging percentage.
Â
She was a winner from the rubber as well, going 6.1 strong innings over the course of the two contests, picking up six strikeouts while allowing just two runs.
Â
"Our goal was to get CeCe (Luster) through four innings each game," said Head Coach
Lorie Coleman. "She hasn't thrown a lot in games since she broke her hand, so we did not know how long she was going to be able to go, but she did a good job."
Â
After Luster finished her first tour of duty in the circle the Eagles' newcomer
Reba DePriest took the ball. DePriest showed exactly why everyone has nothing but praise for her as she struck out four of eight batters over the course of a hitless 2.2 innings of work. She also saw some time in game two, going 1.2 hitless innings and striking out every batter she faced.
Â
Both of the games ended in the bottom of the sixth inning as Biola grabbed an eight run lead to get the umpires to call the games.
Â
The explosion of offense was the brainchild of the coaching staff, who completely shuffled their batting order in search of maximum productivity. Their ideal amount of productivity was set at five runs per game, and they were looking to hold their opponents to two or fewer times across the plate in each contest.
Â
They could put a check in both boxes after the masterful performances put in today.
Â
Biola's lone All-GSAC representative from last seaon,
Bria Madrid, picked up right were she left off in 2013. She had three hits and found a way on base six times in the doubleheader, and she scored four runs while adding four RBI. She was one of four Eagles with at least three RBI. Luster,
Heather Hall and
Vanessa Coleman were the others, they each had three.
Â
All of the rearranging of the lineup worked to perfection as Biola hit .414 on the afternoon, ballooning the Raiders' pitchers combined ERA to 9.88. Biola's pitching staff, consisting of Luster, DePriest and
Shelby Jacobsen, held SOU to a .150 batting average and ended the day with a combined ERA of 1.17, with 15 strikeouts and just two walks.
Â
"We have changed our offense completely this year," said Coleman. "We used to leadoff with our slappers, and now we have moved them to the bottom of our lineup, which basically gives up two cleanup systems. This was our testing day and it obviously paid off very well."
Â
Biola's 18-2 advantage over Southern Oregon shows how far the team has progressed from just a year ago. Biola lost to SOU 2-1 in their lone meeting in 2013. Things went a little differently this time around.
Â
Biola hosts its annual alumni game tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. The team resumes its 2014 schedule on Feb. 4 with a home doubleheader against La Sierra.
