Box Score 2 FULLERTON, Calif. --- On a day which saw a strong wind blowing out to left, the two teams combined for seven home runs, but unfortunately both games went the way of the home team as Biola dropped a pair of high-scoring games 12-11 and 8-6 on Tuesday afternoon at Craig Park.
The Eagles drop to 21-26 and to 5-9 in conference play while the Royals improve to 27-19 and to 7-7 in the GSAC.
Hits and runs were a plenty on the day as the teams combined for 37 runs on 46 hits and a number of big innings by each side. Overall seven home runs were hit, four by the Eagles and three by the Royals.
Ashley Spadt and Vanessa Coleman each connected on two home runs on the day for Biola, Spadt collecting her two in game one and Coleman recording one in each game.
Hope got the party started with two runs in the bottom of the first, but Biola answered back quickly in the top of the second. Sam Roberts drew a leadoff walk and came home easily as Coleman blasted a two-run home run to left. Later in the inning, Spadt on a three-run shot to put Biola up 6-2.
The Eagles added two more runs in the fourth inning as Spadt connected on another home run to stretch the lead to 8-2. Biola continued to add on with two more runs in the fifth, benefitting from a Hope error to take a 10-2.
The Eagles needed just three outs to end the game early on the mercy rule. But that was not to be as a two-run home run by Lauren Ackerson cut the lead to six at 10-4. Hope continued the rally in the sixth, batting around to score six runs--all with two outs. The big blow was a two-run homer to tie the game at 10-10.
Biola plated a run in the top of the seventh to take back the lead as Bria Madrid hit a clutch, two-out single to score Celina Thornton with the go-ahead run.
But Hope--down to its final out--rallied again as Ackerson connected on her second home run of the game: a walk-off blast to dead centerfield to give the Royals the improbable win.
In the second game, neither team could get on the board through the first four innings until Biola opened the scoring with a run in the top of the fifth. with two on and two out, pinch-hitter Illiana Morales drove home a run with a single through the left-side to open the scoring.
Hope--which had at least one runner on base through each of the first four innings, finally got on the board in the fifth, sending 11 batters to the plate and coring five times to go up 5-1.
But Biola responded quickly in the top of the sixth to take back the lead. Bria Madrid opened the inning with a double followed by walks to CeCe Luster and Heather Hall which loaded the bases. Coleman then connected on a grand slam home run--her second homer of the day--to tie the game at 5-5. Sarah Stromwall kept the rally going with a double to left and came around to score on a single by Brooke Madrid to give biola the lead at 6-5.
But three unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth put Hope back on top 8-6.the Eagles were able to get a baserunner in the top of the seventh on a single by Mackenzie Magro, but a double play would end the game.
Biola closes out the regular season at Noon on Saturday, hosting Arizona Christian University at Freedom Field.
