Biola Drops Doubleheader Against William Woods

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola struggled to get its offense rolling, falling in a non-conference doubleheader against William Woods University (Mo.), losing game one 3-1 and game two 4-0 on Thursday afternoon at Freedom Field.

The Eagles drop to 12-17 on the season and to 2-8 in GSAC play while the Owls--receiving votes in the NAIA Preseason Coaches Poll and just three days off ending No. 1 Cal State San Marcos' 28-game home winning-streak--evens its record at 6-6.

In the first game, Biola surrendered three unearned runs to William Woods, which held off the Eagles long enough to win.

Neither team was able to break through until the top of the fifth inning as a two-out error extended the inning and allowed the Owls to take an early 1-0 lead.

Biola answered back in the bottom of the inning, though. Ashley Spadt hit a one-out double and Bria Madrid drove her in with a two-out single to right to tie the game at 1-1.

But William Woods benefitted from more Biola miscues to take back the lead in the sixth. A one out throwing error gave the Owls life and back-to-back walks with two outs loaded the bases. Pinch hitter Kristy Pluchinski came through with a clutch single to plate two and give the Owls the 3-1 lead.

Biola wasn't able to answer back after that. After a leadoff single by Brooke Madrid, the Owls retired the next six batters to preserve the win.

In the second game, William Woods opened the scoring in the top of the first inning with an RBI-double to take an early 1-0 lead. The Owls put the game away with a three-spot in the fifth on an RBI-single and a two-run double to account for the final score of 4-0.

Biola managed just three hits in the second game, but put at least two runners on base through the first three innings. In the third, the Eagles had runners at second and third with one out, but an infield pop out and a ground out ended the inning.

The Eagles return to action on Tuesday, hosting No. 5 Concordia University in a GSAC doubleheader at Freedom Field beginning at 2:00 p.m.
