Box Score 2 COSTA MESA, Calif. --- Biola opened GSAC play on Tuesday with a split against Vanguard University, using a seven-run sixth inning to come back and beat the Lions 7-1 in game two after falling 7-0 in the opener.
The Eagles move to 12-15 on the season and go to 1-1 in conference play while the Lions finish the day at 15-12 and are also 1-1 in the GSAC.
Biola struggled to get much going against the Lions pitching staff through the first 12 innings of the doubleheader. However, the Eagles were able to break through with a big, seven-run sixth inning to cruise to the win in game two.
Trailing 1-0 going into the inning, Biola was able to take advantage of a number of errors by the Lions to get things going. Brooke Madrid opened the inning with single and Chelsea Limm reached first on a sacrifice bunt and fielding error. A single to left by Heather Hall appeared to bring home Biola's first run of the day, but Madrid was thrown out at home.
But back-to-back walks to Bria Madrid and Sarah Stromwall brought home the first run and a throwing error brought home another run. Another error gave Biola another run and back-to-back singles by Ashley Spadt and Celina Thornton made it a 5-0 game.
A fielders' choice re-loaded the bases and Limm then singled home a pair of runs with a hit down the right-field line which capped the inning with Biola leading 7-1.
Biola starter Sarah Enriquez took care of business the rest of the way, allowing just one hit to preserve the win. Enriquez allowed just one run on six hits in game two.
The story was reversed in game one as Biola errors allowed six of Vanguard's seven runs to be unearned. The Eagles would commit three errors overall.
Meanwhile, Biola was unable to do much against the Vanguard starter as the Eagles managed just three hits in the first game--one in each of the final three innings. However, the Eagles could not string hits together and were unable to plate a run in the first.
Biola returns to action on Thursday, hosting William Woods University from Missouri in a non-conference doubleheader at 2:00 p.m. at Freedom Field.
