Biola Splits at William Jessup

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ROCKLIN, Calif. --- CeCe Luster went 3-for-4 and earned the win in the circle in a 6-3 Biola win in game one, but the offense faltered in a pitcher's duel in game two as William Jessup earned a split by taking the nightcap 2-0 in a non-conference doubleheader in Rocklin on Thursday.

The Eagles finish the day at 2-2 while the Warriors opened their season at 1-1.

After falling behind early in game one, Biola roared back into the lead in the fourth. Luster led off the frame with a single, moved to second on a fielder's choice and third on a sacrifice bunt. The Eagles loaded the bases on another fielder's choice, then Ashley Spadt earned an RBI the hard way, being hit by a pitch to tie the game. One out later, Kari Corey came through in the clutch with a two-run single to give Biola a 3-1 lead.

Biola added on three important insurance runs in the top of the seventh as Luster drove home Brooke Madrid with a single and Heather Hall sent home Chelsea Limm with a sacrifice fly. Luster would score the final run of the inning on a William Jessup error.

Those runs turned out to be big as the Warriors scored a pair of runs and had two on with one out. Enriquez, who came on in relief of Luster in the sixth, ran into trouble in the seventh, allowing the two runs. But Luster came back into the game and got a pair of ground outs to end the game.

William Jessup had a baserunner in all but one inning and stranded 10 runners on base in the game. However, Luster worked out of each jam, allowing one run on six hits over 5-2/3 innings to improve to 1-1- on the season.

In the second game, neither team as able to muster much offense, with each team collecting just three hits. However, the Warriors were the only team to score a run.

Int he second inning, Brittany Lamar led off the inning with a solo home run to get William Jessup on the board. In the third, the Warriors added another, benefitting on an error and a passed ball to tally a second run and lead 2-0.

Biola had its chances to score. The best chance came In the third inning as Ashley Spadt led off the frame with a double. She moved to third on a one-out groundout, but two infield outs retired the side with Spadt still at third.

Sam Roberts took the loss to fall to 0-1 on the season, allowing just one earned run on two hits over three innings. Hall came on for the final three innings, giving up one hit and striking out two.

Biola keeps moving north, heading to Redding to take part in the Simpson University Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
