Eagles Battle, But Lose Doubleheader to No. 1 Cal State San Marcos

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola put together a solid showing against the NAIA's top team on Saturday, battling back but ultimately falling short 4-2 to Cal State San Marcos in the second game of a doubleheader after falling 8-0 in first game at Freedom Field.

The Eagles drop to 4-10 on the season with the losses while the Cougars move to 10-3 overall.

Biola got off to a strong start in the second game, taking an early lead with a run in the second inning. With one out, Vanessa Coleman singled through the left side and moved to second on a single by Ashley Spadt. The Eagles had a tough break as a hit to center by Heather Hall turned into a fielder's choice as Spadt was thrown out at second, but left runners on the corners with two outs.

After a passed ball moved Hall to second, Bria Madrid singled to right to plate Coleman. The Eagles nearly had a second run, but Hall was thrown out at the plate trying to score as well.

But the Cougars tied the game in the fourth on an error by the Eagles, then added three in the top of the fifth to take a 4-1 lead.

Biola rallied with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, as pinch-hitter Sam Roberts singled to left and Iliana Morales doubled to left to score the pinch-runner Marissa Suarez. But Courtney Allen came on to get the final out as the Eagles fell 4-2.

Allen was strong in game one, earning the win by throwing seven shutout innings. Biola was able to manage just five hits with two coming in the sixth. Trailing 6-0 at the time, Thornton led off the inning with single up the middle followed by a single by Brooke Madrid. But Allen worked out of the jam with three-straight groundouts.

Just four of the eight runs allowed by Biola pitchers were earned as two errors turned into two unearned runs in each of the first two innings.

Biola returns to action on Tuesday, traveling to face former GSAC rival Azusa Pacific University (5-3) in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 4:00 p.m. in Azusa.
