A Tale Of Two Halves

Biola looked unable to stop WJU in the first, played them tight, but dominated in the final half.

Dakari Archer was second in scoring for Biola, and he added five dimes in a big win.
Box Score LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It was night and day between Biola's first and second half performances in its 86-74 win over William Jessup Friday night.

The 6-3 Eagles trailed by one after a so-so first half, but came out and dominated most of the final 20 minutes, eventually building their lead to 19 points with just under four minutes to play.

"We played so much better in the second half," said Head Coach Dr. Dave Holmquist. "We executed much better on offense and played them tougher on defense."

It was set to be a high-scoring affair throughout, as both team's used quick transition offense to trade points through the first frame. William Jessup seemed to have the upper hand through the start of the first half, building an eight-point lead just seven minutes into the game.

Biola rode a 10-2 run over the next three minutes to tie the game up at 20 with a Jacari Miller layup. Miller was key, scoring five points during that run. Andre Murillo also keyed BU's comeback run, contributing three of his team-leading 23 points during the run.

Murillo, Dakari Archer (16) and Pierre Zook (15) led the Eagles' scoring attack, which amped up its output after trailing 42-41 at the half.

"We had a really good team effort tonight," said Holmquist. "A lot of guys did some good things, especially in the second half."

The difference was felt immediately in the second half, as Biola's defense adjusted to prevent WJU's penetrating offense, and they quickly took a seven-point lead within the first four minutes. Five turnovers by the Warriors helped Biola's cause and got BU rolling early.

Biola's advantage hovered around nine points for most of the second half, as they seemed to be on the way to their fifth straight victory. Then, the Eagles clamped down even tighter on defense, and managed to hold WJU scoreless for nearly three minutes as they built a 72-56 lead with just under six minutes to play.

The 11-point flurry was by far the Eagles' most impressive offensive showing of the night, and it came, conveniently, right after Jessup's Anthony Edwards slammed a show-off dunk down on Biola.

Key to BU's ability to build the lead was their ability to force William Jessup into poor shot selection. The Warriors saw their three-point percentage drop from nearly 60 percent to just over 20 percent in the second half.

"Our defense stepped up and kept them from getting their rhythm threes," said Holmquist.
Biola was pretty accurate from the floor all night long, compiling a better shooting percentage, three-point percentage and free throw percentage than the Warriors.

They were also the more dominating physical presence, always a nice result to get, as they outscored WJU in the paint by nearly 20 points, and also had eight more rebounds.

Murillo and Christian Misi combined for the bulk of BU's 34 boards, grabbing 10 and eight, respectively.

The Eagles are back in action tomorrow, facing off with No. 24 Cal Maritime (9-3) at 4:30 p.m. inside Chase Gymnasium.
