Box Score BROWNSVILLE, Texas --- No. 3 Biola is back on track after taking down a top ranked national opponent at a neutral site in Texas. The Eagles started out shaky, dropping the first set to No. 22 Columbia, but a fantastic second set got them on a roll and led them to a 3-1 win (18-25, 25-10, 25-21, 25-14).
Â
After losing two straight matches to the national No. 1 and No. 2, Biola needed a big win to get them set to return to Golden State Athletic Conference play next week.
Â
Amy Weststeyn rose to the occasion and had a huge game for the Eagles, leading all players with 15 kills and hitting nearly .500. She upped her season hitting percentage to .417, good enough for fourth best in the entire National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.
Â
After a difficult loss in set number one, Weststeyn and BU improved their game in each set as the match went on. They either upped or equaled their kill total and hitting percentage in each of the four sets.
Â
Gracee Gallarda led everyone with 36 assists, upping her season total to 523 after setting 35-plus times for the ninth time this season and the third straight game. Her 523 sets come in just 48 sets, giving her the sixth best average in the nation.
Â
The Eagles got big attack numbers from
Joclyn Kirton, who had her fourth straight 10-plus kill match (12), and
Britta Blaser, who set a season high with nine kills.
Â
Tara Rallis and Gallarda were sprawling all over the court as each of them had double-digit dig numbers against the Cougars.
Â
Many volleys were cut short by some fantastic play at the net tonight as the two squads combined for 16 solo blocks and just one block assist. Trinity Ojo had five solo blocks for the Cougars, and Weststeyn tacked on five for BU, her second straight game with five.
Â
The win moves Biola to 16-2 (6-1 GSAC) and drops Columbia to 17-9, a disappointing season for a team that finished in the top four a year ago.
Â
The Eagles return home to Chase Gymnasium on Tuesday night to face Saint Katherine College at 7 p.m. They restart GSAC competition with a road match against The Master's on Saturday.
