Biola Offense Falters at No. 1 Concordia

Sarah Enriquez
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 IRVINE, Calif. --- Biola put together another solid first game against No. 1 Concordia, falling 5-3 in the opener followed by a tough 7-0 loss in the nightcap in a GSAC doubleheader on Saturday in Irvine.

Biola suffers its eighth-straight loss with six of those coming against NAIA Top 10 teams and drops to 15-25 on the season and to 1-11 in GSAC play. Concordia wraps up the GSAC title with the win, improving to 50-2 on the year with a perfect 14-0 conference mark. The wins also extended Concordia's winning-streak to an NAIA-record 43 games.

Biola had a tough time manufacturing much offense on the day, recording just one hit--that coming in the second game of the day. In the first game, Biola would get no-hit in game one but still managed three runs and made close game of it thanks to solid pitching by freshman Sarah Enrique.

Enrique allowed just five runs to the high-scoring Concordia team. The first was unearned and came in the second inning, giving the home team the early 1-0 lead. A suicide squeeze brought home another for Concordia in the fourth and a two-run home run by the NAIA's leading home run hitter Amanda Fama would make it 4-0 in the fifth.

Biola would bat around and score three runs in the top of the sixth to cut the Concordia lead to one, despite not recording a hit. With two out and a runner at first, Biola would load the bases on a walk to CeCe Luster and a hit-by-pitch by Natalie Parker.

Pinch-hitter Kari Corey struck out but reached base on a wild pitch, bringing home Chelsea Limm and extending the inning. Concordia pitcher Katie Cotta then would bring in another, hitting Vanessa Coleman with a pitch, then walked in a third run with a walk to Leslie Larson. However, Biola was unable to get the tying run across and Concordia would add a big insurance run in the bottom of the inning to account for the scoring.

Enriquez suffered the tough loss loss to fall to 8-10 while Cotta improved to 16-0 with a 15-strikeout, no-hit performance.

In the second game, Fama crushed a two-run home run to right-center to give Concordia the early 2-0 lead. Katie Carson added a solo home run in the second to make it a 3-0 game.

Brooke Madrid got Biola's first hit of the day in the fourth with a single through the left side of the infield, but she was quickly erased as Luster grounded into a double play to end the frame.

Concordia broke the game open with three runs in the fifth and added another in the sixth to pick up the 7-0 win.

Luster suffered the loss in game two, dropping to 7-14 with the win going to Courtney Young who improved to 10-0.

Biola heads over to Fullerton on Tuesday for its final road games of the season, taking on Hope International University in a GSAC doubleheader at Craig Park in Fullerton beginning at 2:00 p.m.
