AZUSA, Calif. --- Biola came within one out of an upset of No. 10 Azusa Pacific University in the first game of a GSAC doubleheader on Tuesday only to see a walk-off home run spoil things in a 4-3 game-one loss. The Eagles would then fall 13-0 in game two at the APU Softball Field in Azusa.
Biola falls to 15-19 on the season as its four-game winning streak comes to an end. The Eagles fall to 1-7 in GSAC play. The Cougars are now 30-6 and 4-2 in the conference.
Biola fell behind early in game as the Cougars scored a run in the bottom of the third inning to take a 1-0 lead.
The Eagles would break through with a pair of runs in the sixth inning. Chelsea Limm led of the inning with a single to short and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Brooke Madrid. After a walk to CeCe Luster, Natalie Parker came through in the clutch with a double to deep left-center to bring home a pair and put Biola up on top 2-1.
After working out of a jam in the bottom of the sixth, the Eagles tacked on an insurance run in the seventh as Keri Corey doubled home Sarah Stromwall to make it 3-1. However despite having a runner at third with one out for the second-straight inning, the Eagles could not push across another run.
That came back to haunt them in the bottom of the seventh. Luster was able to get two outs and had a runner at second when the Cougars rallied. Olivia Wilcox singled home a run to pull APU within one and Erika Marmolejo ended the game with a two-run home run to left to give the Cougars the win.
Luster had another strong start allowing just one run on eight hits over the first six innings with three strikeouts. However, the Cougars were able to spoil the bid with the late rally.
Things went from bad to worse for the Eagles in game two as APU scored six in the third inning and added seven in the fourth to cruise to a 13-0 win in five innings.
Biola returns to action on Saturday, hosting Vanguard University in a GSAC doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m. at Freedom Field.
