Biola Gets Back on Track with Sweep of Hamline

Vanessa Coleman

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola walked off with a come-from-behind win in game one and cruised to a mercy-rule victory in game two in a doubleheader sweep over Hamline University (Minn.), winning 7-6 and 11-3 on Wednesday afternoon.

The Eagles snap out of a little slump and improve to 13-17 on the season while dropping the Pipers to 1-10.

Biola got off to a sluggish start in the first game as Hamline scored four runs in the first inning highlighted by a bases-clearing triple by Lauren Clouston.

The Eagles answered back with a three-spot in the bottom of the third to close to within one. With two out, Brooke Madrid singled home Kayna Lamb with the first run of the frame. CeCe Luster then followed with a two-run home run over the center-field fence.

Hamline added another run in the top of the fourth inning, but Biola would tie the game in the bottom of the fourth taking advantage of a Piper error to make it a 5-5 games.

Hamline would go back on top in the fifth thanks to a lead-off home run by Clouston. But again, the Eagles came back and tied the score. Chelsea Limm reached on a bunt single and came around to score two batters later as Luster singled to right.

Neither team scored in the sixth and the Eagles held the Pipers with out a run in the top of the seventh, keeping the score tied at 6-6 heading to the bottom of the seveth.

Chelsea Limm led off the seventh with a double and Brooke Madrid was intentionally walked to put runners at first and second with no one out. Luster dropped a single just in front of the center fielder to load the bases. Natalie Parker then won it for the Eagles with a walk-off walk.

Hamline opened game two with an early lead again, scoring one in the top of the first.  The Pipers got two quick outs in the bottom of the first, but Biola drew back-to-back walks and an infield single to load the bases. Vanessa Coleman then stepped up and cleared the bases with a grand slam home run to center to make it 4-1.

Biola added one more in the second on an RBI-groundout by Luster, then added another in the third on a bases-loaded walk to make it 6-1.

Hamline would tally two in the fourth to cut the gap a bit, but the Eagles responded quickly with a run in the bottom of the frame on a double by Coleman to score Parker.

After a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the fifth, Biola closed the game out in the bottom of the fifth with four runs. Madrid single home the first run followed by a two-run single by Luster to make it 10-3. With runners at second and third, Biola would win the game on a wild pitch which brought Madrid around with the game-ending run.

Luster allowed just three runs on five hits over five innings to pick up the win.

Biola closes out a stretch of three doubleheaders in three days with a non-conference matchup against Doane College (Neb.) on Thursday beginning at 2:00 p.m.
