SAN MARCOS, Calif. ---
Leslie Larson again had the walk-off winner in the ninth against Simpson University as Biola split a pair of games at the Cal State Cougar Clash, beating Simpson 3-2 but falling to No. 2 Cal State San Marcos 6-0 on Friday afternoon.
Larson came up huge for the Eagles (7-9) once again, singling home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth of the first game. After holding Simpson without a run in the first two innings of the international tie-breaker, Biola had its chance to end the contest.
Brooke Madrid was placed on second to start the inning and the Redhawks intentionally walked CeCe Luster to put two on with no one out. Natalie Parker than moved the pair with a successful sacrifice bunt and Larson brought the winning run home with a single to left.
The contest was nearly identical to Biola's nine-inning victory over Northwest Christian University last Saturday in which Larson also had a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth of a 3-2 win. However, in that game it was the Eagles who came back from an early deficit.
Biola got off to a quick start in the game thanks to a two-run home run by CeCe Luster in the bottom of the first inning. The Redhawks got back into the game by taking advantage of a Biola error, scoring two unearned runs to tie the game in the fifth.
The Eagles had a chance to take back the lead in the seventh, putting two on with one out, but a pair of strikeouts ended the threat. In the top of the eighth, Simpson moved the tiebreaker runner to third on a single with no one out. Center fielder Celina Thornton then made a great throw on a potential sacrifice fly, throwing the runner out at home to keep the score level.
Biola also had a great opportunity in the bottom of the eighth, getting a single by Sarah Stromwall to also put two on with no one out. But two straight groundouts followed by a line out to short ended the threat.
The Eagles and starter Sarah Enriquez held the Redhawks' tiebreaker runner at second while recording three quick outs including one by strikeout. Biola then ended the game in the bottom of the inning with Larson's heroics.
Enriquez was solid in picking up her fourth win of the season, allowing just two unearned runs over nine innings, recording three strikeouts.
In the second game, Biola did a solid job of getting on base against a tough Cal State San Marcos team, but just couldn't get the clutch hits.
Luster was strong to start the game, allowing just one hit over the first three innings. Meanwhile, Biola got a chance to get on the board first, putting two on with two out for Luster. She got a pitch to hit and hit it well to right, but it stayed in the park to end the threat.
In the fourth, the Cougars got on the board with a two-run home run, then added four more runs in the sixth to pull away.
The Eagles continued to get hits including putting runners in scoring position in two of the final four innings, but just could not find the clutch hit they needed.
Biola takes a well-deserved break, returning to action on Wednesday (Mar. 7), hosting Menlo College in a non-conference doubleheader at Freedom Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
