ROCKLIN, Calif. --- Fielding a young team and battling early-season injuries, Biola was unable to pick up a win in its season-opening series against William Jessup on Thursday, falling 8-0 and 8-2 in a non-conference doubleheader in Rocklin.
The Eagles (0-2) had a tough time getting things going in the first game as nerves and first-game jitters led to four errors. In addition, Biola faced a tough Warriors' pitcher in Emily Buhrkuhl, who allowed just one hit in the game. That hit was a single off the bat of sophomore
CeCe Luster.
Luster, who got the start in the circle in game one, did not pitch bad in her first start of the season, but the Eagles errors behind her led to three unearned runs.
Game two was a lot better for Biola, which seemed to shake off the nerves from game one. After the Warriors scored four runs over the first two innings, the Eagles answered back with a run in the third.
Chelsea Limm led off the inning with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by freshman
Keri Corey.
In the fourth, Biola would add another run as
Celina Thornton led off the inning with a single, was sacrificed to second and scored on a double by Limm.
However, despite seven hits, the Eagles could get no closer and William Jessup pulled away with two runs in each of the final two innings.
With its first doubleheader out of the way, Biola now sets its sights on a busy two days of action at the Simpson University tournament in Redding on Friday and Saturday. The Eagles, who made the three-hour trip up to Redding after the game, play the first of six games in two days at 9:00 a.m. Biola faces Corban University (Ore.), Northwests Christian University (Ore.) and Eastern Oregon University on Friday.
