Chase Adams scored a team-high 19 points including 13 in the second half as Biola upset No. 16 Concordia 75-62, taking the season series with the huge GSAC road win on Saturday night.
Biola picks up its fifth-straight win and second-straight over an NAIA Top 25 team to improve to 17-7 on the season and to 7-5 in GSAC play. Concordia drops to 18-5 and out of first place in the GSAC again, falling to 8-4 in conference action.
Saturday's game was oddly reminiscent of the meeting between the two earlier in the season with Biola leading throughout, Concordia mounting a late second-half charge, but Biola holding on for the win.
And once again, it was Biola's suffocating defense which was able to overcome Concordia's high-powered offense.
Adams keyed a big second half for Biola with 13 of his 19 points in the final 20 minutes with Given Kalipinde and Kaimarr Price each recording double-doubles in the game. Kalipinde tallied 12 points and added 14 rebounds to go alone with four assists and two steals for Biola. Price contributed 13 points and 11 rebounds to go along with two blocks.
After Concordia scored the opening basket one minute in, Biola took charge running out to an early 15-8 lead through the first 10:30 of the game. Concordia broke into double-figures on the next possession with a three-pointer by Cameron Gliddon--who bounced back from his one-point effort in La Mirada with a game-high 20 points.
Concordia closed to within three one minute later and trailed by four on a tip-in by Dakota Downs at the 8:34 mark. But Biola used a 9-0 run over the next three minutes to take a 29-16 lead with 5:49 left in the half.
Concordia again pulled to within three with a 12-2 run but Biola quickly went back up by 10 and took a 38-31 lead to the half.
The teams continued to go back and forth through the first part of the second half with Biola clinging precariously to its lead. After Adams' three-point play with 10:32 left in the game gave the visitors a 53-43 lead, Concordia went to work, using a 12-3 run to cut the lead to one at 56-55 with 6:20 left.
Adams quickly responded, hitting a three-pointer on the next possession, then picking up a steal and fast-break layup to stretch the lead back to six. Concordia would get no closer the rest of the way as Biola hit 10-of-12 free throws down the stretch and played solid defense to hold on for the win.
Andre Murillo had another solid game against his former team, pouring in 16 points and adding four boards in 27 minutes. Zack Zaragoza came off the bench to score seven points and pull down seven rebounds.
Concordia guard Tim Harris, who torched Biola for 29 points the last time the teams met, was not in the lineup and Austin Simon, who had 16 points in the last meeting, was held to just three on 1-of-12 shooting.
Biola held Concordia to a season-low for the second time this season, allowing jut 62 points to the team that leads the GSAC and is second in the NAIA with an 89.2 points per game average. It was slightly better than Biola's season average of 60.7 points allowed per game--a mark which ranks fourth in the NAIA.
The victory at the Concordia Arena was a big one for Biola, which hadn't won at Concordia since the 2005-06 season. That year, Biola escaped with an 83-81 overtime win and swept the season series as well. In its previous 10 trips to the CU Arena, Biola had been 1-9, dating back to the 2002-03 season.
Biola's win also keeps its march upward in the GSAC standings on track. The Concordia loss drops it into a four-way tie for second-place at 8-4. Westmont narrowly won on the road at San Diego Christian on Saturday night and is one game up on the crowd. Biola is currently in sixth place, but just one game out of the second-place pileup.
The Master's College also had a shot to remain in first place pulled away as the Mustangs blew a 15-point lead with nine minutes left, falling by two at home to Hope International. Point Loma Nazarene defeated Fresno Pacific handily at home to move to 8-4 while Azusa Pacific defeated Vanguard on Friday night to also move up to 8-4.
Biola has a great opportunity to pull closer to the top on Tuesday, traveling to Santa Barbara to face No. 22 Westmont College at Murchison Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m. The Eagles are looking for a bit of revenge after blowing a big second-half lead and a shot to tie at the end in a 60-56 loss in La Mirada in January.
