Kalipinde's Last-Minute Three Downs Fresno Pacific

Given Kalipinde
Box Score FRESNO --- Given Kalipinde drained a contested three-pointer with 2.7 seconds left to lift Biola to a 64-62 win over Fresno Pacific University in a GSAC game on Tuesday night at the Special Events Center in Fresno.

The Eagles have now won seven of their last eight games since losing to the Sunbirds on a last-second shot in La Mirada earlier this year. Biola stands at 19-8 on the season and moves into a fourth-place tie with Azusa Pacific and The Master's College at 9-6 in GSAC play--one game out of second place and two out of first.

Kalipinde's three-pointer capped a wild game which featured seven ties and 10 lead changes. Neither team led by more than than a handful of points down the stretch. Biola overcame a seven-point deficit with 10 minutes left and led by four with four minutes left.

But Fresno Pacific clawed back into it and took a one-point lead on a Matt Christman three with 1:05 to play. After a missed three-pointer by Kalipinde with 30 seconds left, Biola fouled Kenny Bradford, sending him to the line for a one-and-one attempt. Fresno Pacific missed just two free throws in 12 attempts on Tuesday, but one of those came on the front end of the bonus attempt and Biola secured the rebound with 20 seconds left.

Fresno Pacific had fouls to give so attempted to force the Eagles to waste time without getting off a shot. But the fouls came quickly and the Sunbirds would have to put Biola on the line if they did it again. So Dakota Anderson took the in-bound pass and quickly fed it to Kalipinde who fired up a three-point attempt with a hand in his face and hit nothing but the bottom of the net.

Bradford would try one final heave from half court as time expired, but it missed to the left and Biola walked out of Fresno with a big road victory. It was just Biola's second win in Fresno in its last five trips.

Kalipinde finished with 10 points and added six assists and three steals in the winning effort. Andre Murillo led the Eagles with 17 points while Chase Adams added 15. Anderson poured in a season-high 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting, adding three assists in 35 minutes.

Fresno Pacific jumped out to the early lead in the game, going up 13-6 six minutes into the game. Biola responded with a bucket by Murillo sandwiched between three-pointers from Anderson to take a 14-13 lead just three minutes later.

Biola broke a 25-25 tie with 4:48 left by scoring five-straight, but led by just one at 30-29 at the half.

In the second half, another Anderson three 1:23 into the second half gave Biola a four-point lead at 35-31. However, a quick 10-point run gave that lead right back to Fresno Pacific. The Sunbirds would stretch the lead to seven at 48-41 on a bucket by Donte Nicholas at the 10:03 mark as it looked like they might pull away.

Biola answered right back with an 11-0 run started by an Anderson three-pointer and capped by back-to-back layups by Murillo. The Eagles maintained the tenuous lead the rest of the way, holding a 61-59 edge after Adams hit a layup with 2:03 to go. But Christman's three gave Fresno the late lead and set up the wild finish.

Nicholas led all scorers with 21 points--15 of which came in the second half--on 7-of-9 shooting in the game. Christman added 12 points with Bradford contributing 11.

Both teams shot exactly 50% in the game with Biola connecting on nine three-pointers and Fresno hitting eight. Both teams also pulled down 23 rebounds and committed 11 turnovers. The Eagles had eight offensive rebounds leading to 10 second chance points and held a 34-20 edge in points in the paint.

Thanks to a pair of upsets, Biola moves into a three-way tie for fourth in the conference at 9-6. Point Loma and Westmont sit tied for second at 10-5 with Concordia holding onto sole possession of first place at 11-4. With three games left, the Eagles have the easiest schedule, playing at Hope International (tied for 8th at 4-11), hosting San Diego Christian (10th at 3-12) and host The Master's (tied for 4th at 9-6).

Biola travels to Hope International on Saturday for its final regular-season road game, facing the Royals at 7:30 p.m. at Darling Pavilion.
