LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola got off to a great start to the 2011 season, picking up a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Cal State San Marcos in its season-opener Tuesday night as senior Cody Shelton picked up the lone goal in the 65th minute.

The game was truly anyone's contest through the first hour with both teams creating a number of chances and thwarting those chances effectively. However, Biola came out with the better of play in the second half and finally broke through in the 65th minute.

Senior Cody Shelton headed home a corner kick off the foot of fellow senior Marco Ruvalcaba to tally the first goal of the season and put Biola on top 1-0.

Cal State San Marcos kept up the pressure throughout the rest of the game, culminating in a long throw-in in the final seconds. With everyone including the goalkeeper crowding the goal box, the throw came right into the crowd but was headed high and over the goal as the horn sounded.

Senior Aaron Fenlason, a 2010 NAIA First-Team All-American, made four saves to record his first shutout of the 2011 season, facing 12 shots from the Cougars (0-2-0 overall).

Biola improves its all-time record in home openers to 31-17-4 including an impressive 5-1-0 record over the last six seasons. The Eagles are also 26-20-6 in season-opening games all-time.

Biola returns to action on Friday, hosting Marymount College (Calif.) in a non-conference match at Al Barbour Field starting at 7:00 p.m.
