Nicolette Mather

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- No. 5 Biola held its two opponents on Friday to a combined negative attack percentage and rolled to a pair of victories including a sweep over No. 16 Bellevue University (Neb.) on the opening day of the 2011 Biola University/Holiday Inn Summer Slam.

The Eagles (5-1) cruised to a 25-10, 25-10, 25-5 win over William Jessup in its first match, then defeated Bellevue 25-22, 25-19, 25-19 to win their fourth and fifth-straight matches.

Juniors Christine Douglas and Nicolette Mather led the way for Biola with Douglas recording 23 kills in the two matches and Mather adding 20. Junior Rachel Buckley had eight kills and nine blocks including seven in the match against William Jessup.

In the final match of the evening, Biola used a balance attack as three Eagles recorded double-digit kills in the win over Bellevue. Douglas had a match-high 13 with Mather and senior Sarah McAtee adding 12 each.

Biola followed nearly the same trend in each set, jumping out to an early lead, allowing the Bruins to claw back into it, then pulling away late. The Eagles opened the first set with a 15-5 run and appeared to be ready to dominate. However, Bellevue scored 14 of the next 20 points to pull within two at 21-19. Biola stood tough and weathered the storm as McAtee closed the door with a kill to give the Eagles the 25-22 win.

In the second set, Biola again rolled early, opening an 11-5 lead and holding a 16-8 edge near the midway point. But a 7-1 run by the Bruins closed the gap to two at 17-15. The Eagles then responded with a 6-1 run of their own capped by a McAtee ace to make it 23-16 and they would cruise from there.

Biola would close out the match with a strong showing in the third set, leading from start to finish and not allowing the Bruis to get within three points through a short charge near the end.

The victory was Biola's second over a ranked team this year as the Eagles are 2-1 in such matches. Despite being out-blocked 8-5 in the contest, Biola posted a solid .250 attack percentage while holding Bellevue to a .120 mark.

In the first match of the day, BIola had little trouble against William Jessup, recording 10 blocks and holding the Warriors to a -.211 (12-27-71) attack percentage. The Eagles on the other hand committed just five attack errors and hit at a .433 clip.

Douglas again led the team with 10 kills while Mather added eight. Buckley had seven blocks with freshman Rachel Krueger adding six including one solo.

Among the other matches at the Summer Slam were a number of upsets with first-year program Cal State San Marcos recording two. The Cougars upset No. 7 Lewis-Clark State in five sets, then cruised past No. 14 Southern Oregon in four. Southern Oregon was also knocked off in the tournament's first match, falling in five sets to Vanguard University.

No. 10 College of Idaho and No. 5 Biola join Cal State San Marcos as the only undefeated teams in the field through the first day of competition.

Biola and College of Idaho will square off in the Noon match on Saturday with the Eagles closing out the tournament with a showdown against No. 7 Lewis-Clark State at 6:00 p.m.
