Roberts Hits Two Home Runs, But No. 3 Concordia Wins Twice in Last At-Bat

Lyndsie Roberts

IRVINE, Calif. --- Biola senior Lyndsie Roberts belted a pair of home runs, tying the school record with 10 on the season, but it was not enough as No. 3 Concordia won twice in its final at-bat, taking game one 2-1 and game two 9-8 in eight innings on Tuesday afternoon.

Biola, who moved up to No. 21 in the latest NAIA National Poll released earlier in the day, drops to 21-13 on the season and to 2-2 in GSAC play. Concordia improves to 36-4 overall and moves to 6-0 in the conference.

Both games proved to be thrillers with Biola overcoming a six-run deficit in the second game including scoring four in the top of the seventh inning to force extra innings. However, Concordia would pull out the wins with a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh of game one and a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth of game two.

Roberts and CeCe Luster combined to provide the bulk of the offense on the day. Roberts went 2-for-5 with two home runs and three RBIs while Luster was 2-for-7 with two runs scored and three RBIs.

Roberts' two home runs gave her 10 on the season which matches the school record set by Amerra Kesterson during the 2006 season. She also has 18 homers in her career, just six behind the school record of 24 established by Keena Levert (2006-10).

Biola had a tough time overcoming 10 errors on the afternoon--including seven in game two--which led to six of Concordia's 11 runs being unearned.

In the first game, Concordia struck first with a run in the bottom of the first inning, scoring a run on a throwing error by the pitcher to go up 1-0. That would be it for the home team through the next five innings as Luster pitched well, scattering four hits over that stretch.

Biola was having trouble countering, though, drawing two walk through the first four innings for its lone two base runners. In the fifth, Biola was able to get a pair of singles but could do no more as Concordia pitcher Jennifer Simons wound up striking out the side.

Biola finally broke through with the tying run in the top of the sixth as Roberts blasted a two-out, solo home run to right field to tie things up at 1-1.

But Concordia was able to get the winning run in the bottom of the seventh with a two-out rally. Katie Carson hit a two-out single to left followed by a single by Samantha Perez. Amanda Fama then ended the game with a double to right to plate Carson with the winning run.

In the second game, Concordia took control early, again scoring an unearned run in the bottom of the first. CU would tack on three more runs in the second--all unearned--to go up 4-0 after two innings.

Biola came back with two runs in the top of the fourth inning as Roberts hit her second homer of the afternoon, belting a two-run shot to left field to make it a 4-2 game.

Concordia seemed to take control quickly, though, plating four in the bottom of the fourth to go up 8-2.

However, Biola did not go away quietly, chipping away at the lead with a two-run fifth. Chelsea Limm reached on a fielder choice and moved to second on a bunt single by Jillian Storm. Lauren Gandy then singled up the middle and Limm was able to score as a wild throw by the Concordia centerfielder allowed her to come around. Luster then picked up an RBI with a groundout to make it 8-4.

The score would remain that way into the seventh before Biola rallied late to force extra innings. Chelsea Limm drew a leadoff walk which was followed by singles from Storm and Gandy which loaded the bases. Luster then drove home two with a single to center to make it 8-6.

Roberts then drew a walk to load the bases for Shaylynn Weststeyn, who drove home a run with a sacrifice fly to right. Vanessa Coleman then came through with a clutch two-out single to bring home Luster with the game-tying run.

After holding Concordia in the bottom of the seventh, the teams headed to extra innings. Biola was unable to score in the top of the eighth despite having runners at second and third with just one out.

Concordia would load the bases with no out on an infield single and a fielder's choice. Luster, who came on in relief in the seventh, was able to get a ground out for the first out, but then pinch-hitter Brieana Eckel single to left to five the home team the 9-8 victory.

Luster suffered the loss in both games, dropping to 7-6 on the season. Weststeyn started the second game and had a tough three innings, walking six batters and giving up five runs though just one was earned. Roberts came on in relief and gave up eight hits in three innings and three runs.

The extra inning second game was Biola's eighth of the season, breaking the school record of seven set back during the 2001 season. The Eagles are 3-5 in extra innings, however and are now 6-5 in one-run games.

Biola returns to action on Friday, April 1, hosting No. 1 California Baptist University in a GSAC doubleheader at Freedom Field. First pitch is slated for 2:00 p.m.
